Fifteen cutting-edge innovators funded by the SME Instrument attended GITEX - the largest technology exchange and marketplace for Middle East & Africa - as part of the SME Instrument Overseas trade fairs programme. The companies were brought to GITEX to promote their companies at the Tech Week, picthe their projects to investors and meet new business partners, in the auspices of the EU Pavilion in GITEX.

The companies attended more than a total of 150 meetings, in addition to pitching opportunities with business and government entities from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. The purpose is to seize business opportunities to  upscale their activities on the promising UAE Tech market and leveraging business opportunities in the region. “We were thrilled to have a European Pavilion of 15 SMEs participating for the first time at GITEX. These SMEs are highly innovative businesses with global ambitions that have the potential to disrupt established value networks and markets”, said Dr Bernd Reichert, Head of Unit, Executive Agency for SMEs of the European Commission.

The companies were welcomed by His Excellency, Patrizio Fondi, EU Ambassador to the UAE. Speaking on the European Union’s involvement in the exhibition, the Ambassador said: “We are proud to participate in GITEX for the first time, as it gives us the opportunity to demonstrate our technological innovation as an EU collective, and aligns with our recently launched Horizon 2020 project. In addition, having young people showcasing their companies within the European pavilion enables us to empower the younger generation in Europe, which is very important and one of our key priorities.

“The EU pavilion at GITEX features 15 of Europe’s most innovative new companies; businesses on the stand range from a cybersecurity company, to an innovative anti-drone system. The selection process was very rigorous and only the most original and promising companies were chosen to take part - the final 15 should certainly be proud to be exhibiting at GITEX.”

The EU’s Trade Counsellors in the UAE Wolfgang Penzias and Tania Sateri also attended GITEX, providing insights for the attending companies into the strong ties with the UAE, and Dubai, which the EU is continuing to build.
