During the first noon-to-noon workshop, you will receive an overview with case studies of funding options for growth, the full range from banks to venture capital, including practical information on deal terms and documentation. In the second noon-to-noon workshop, you will learn how to find, how to engage with, and how to collaborate with major corporate companies, for open innovation and as business partners. During the two noon-to-noon workshops you will exchange experience in small groups with other SMEI companies and your own business coaches.
We highly recommend you to bring your SME-Instrument coach, to maximize the impact on your business. When seeking finance and business partnering are part of the coaching plan, your coach may attend to work with you through these topics. We will issue a separate coaching contract for that.
Outcomes: Companies will be able to confidently decide on what funding (equity and debt, and hybrid) best fits their present and future needs for growth and sustainability, and how to develop effective offers and responses to matched investors. They will also gain an understanding of typical documentation, diligence procedures, and investor requirements, for the short- and longer-term. SMEs will have good knowledge of how to discover potential collaborators, engage with, and negotiate partnership agreements with big corporate companies, as well as an understanding of open innovation strategy and tactics.
Presenters: The funding sessions are led by Jose Martinez, who is currently CEO of R&D Consulting Boutique, with a track record as CEO in Strategic Consulting, MD in a global British company and International Sales Director. The corporate sessions are led by Unai Zorriqueta, who is a partner of Hasten Ventures in Bilbao; a firm devoted to early stage M&A, business acceleration and technology transfer services in the international technology market. Unai brings more than 20 years of experience accelerating innovative businesses, from both consolidated as well as newly created companies.
Day 1 – May 8, 13:00 – 17:30 - Seeking Investors The first day covers typical funding options for growing companies, equity (private equity, venture capital) and debt (bank loans) and mixtures of the two (mezzanine). Examples of legal and financial documentation, and typical terms and timescales are given. Examples and practical exercises will be based on participating companies’ challenges. You are welcome to introduce your own situation and propose specific problems and challenges to be discussed.

Day 2 – May 9, 08:00 – 12:30- Seeking Investors You work as experience sharing groups, discussing and applying the results of your learning to your products and services, facilitated by your own coaches and experts. The focus will be on funding issues. You will report on your new approach, your solutions, and lessons learned.
Day 2 – May 9, 13:00 – 17:30 - Opportunities for Corporate Partnering The second afternoon focuses firstly on the theory, tools and methods for effective and profitable corporate collaboration, from initial partner scouting, through to pitching and negotiating. Corporate requirements – particularly for open innovation, typical IP negotiations and terms for collaborative working, are discussed and reviewed. You are invited to introduce your own situation and propose specific problems and challenges for discussion.

Day 3 – May 10, 08:00 – 12:30 - Opportunities for Corporate Partnering You work as groups, discussing and applying the results of your learning to your products and services, facilitated by your own coaches and experts.
