Embedded computers are part of our daily life. Most of the objects we use daily include processors and computers; they are becoming more and more powerful, constantly connected and increasingly demanding. Those are the Cyber-Physical Systems, they are required to deliver high-performance functionality under conditions which are often critical in terms of performance, real-time constraints, security and power consumption.
Several challenges are becoming extremely relevant in this area:
- Power consumption: if a computer is running on battery, then its autonomy is limited by the weight and size of the battery; if it runs on AC power then the energy it uses has a significant cost, and generates problems like heat dissipation.
- The availability of multi-core and massively parallel architectures opens many possible application scenarios, but poses also formidable challenges in terms of programming approaches and skill requirements.
- Many “mixed-criticality” scenarios are emerging, where the same system executes several applications with very different requirements.
Our objective is to build upon Europe's industrial and technology strengths in low power computing and embedded and cyber-physical systems, with the objective to strengthen European competitiveness in the key parts of the emerging advanced computing market.
HiPEAC-Helping to build a European Vision
HiPEAC, the European Network of Excellence on High Performance and Embedded Architecture and Compilation, is the premier platform for networking and collaboration in the domain of computing systems in Europe.
Its objective is simple to describe, but extremely challenging to reach: to improve the quality of the European computing systems research by creating a visible and integrated community while steering and coordinating research efforts.
HiPEAC has financed through three consecutive collaborative projects from the European Commission, and constantly growing over time. HiPEAC manages three flagship activities (Computing System Week, a yearly Conference and a Summer School) and many other initiatives, amongst which the HiPEAC roadmap which provides very valuable information for the research and innovation activities of the European Commission.

Two specific actions will be funded under the H2020 Research Programme, in order to stimulate innovation in advanced computing.
- Platforms and ecosystems: reference architectures and platforms for customised low-power heterogeneous computing systems delivering high-performance functionality under real-time constraints, across several sectors and application domains. Activities should include industrial consensus building, pre-normative activities, reference implementations, proof-of-concept demonstration and validation in key application domains, taking into account the users’ perspective.
- Connecting innovators across value chains: application experiments driven by users’ requirements, and bringing together all actors along the value chain to customise and use advanced low power computing systems in cyber-physical systems.
ARTEMIS -ECSEL "Industry and Public Authorities in Partnership" will build the required technologies for innovative products and services.
