Photonics – what is it about?

Photonics is the science and technology of light. Photonics deals with generating, guiding, manipulating, amplifying and detecting light. Photonics is behind many of the innovations which have transformed the way we live in the last few years.

Lasers, optical fibres, the cameras in our phones, LED lighting in our cars, homes, computer screens & TVs and optical tweezers are just a few examples of how photonics have changed technology and affected our daily lives. Given the potential which photonics has to enhance innovation across several industries, it has been recognized as one of Europe's Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) of the 21st Century.

The European Technology Platform Photonics21 represents photonics research priorities at the European level. It aims to develop a common approach between European industry, science and policy.
