The study on the “Effectiveness of self- and co-regulation in the context of implementing the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD)” has been carried for Directorate General Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT), of the European Commission.
92% of individual consumers and 80% of consumer associations strongly agree that consumers and businesses should be able to purchase and access services everywhere in the EU. Almost 90% of individual consumer respondents experienced geo-blocking or other geographically-based restrictions when shopping in another EU country.
This report analyses the answers to 8 open questions in the European Commission’s public consultation on platforms. Themes included the definition of platforms, platforms’ treatment of suppliers and customers, constraints platforms face when expanding their business in the EU, and their handling of consumer data.
The European Commission has just proposed an update of EU audiovisual rules to create a fairer environment for all players, promote European films, protect children and tackle hate
speech better. This proposal also reflects a new approach to online platforms, addressing challenges in different areas.
