This seminar was organised for EC staff involved in H2020.
Purpose and objectives
Horizon 2020 takes a big step towards Open Science in Europe. All research projects receiving H2020 funding will have the obligation to give Open Access to any peer reviewed journal articles they publish related to H2020 funding. In addition, some projects will participate in the H2020 Open Research Data Pilot.
The purpose of this seminar was to help EC staff to understand what might be the needs of H2020 project beneficiaries regarding the new EC Open Access rules. Information was provided on the new rules as well as existing and planned e-infrastructure resources and support services.
The seminar also aimed at improving understanding on how the EC policy and infrastructures relate to those that the beneficiaries will have to deal with in their home countries and home institutions. Many researchers participating in H2020 projects will also participate in projects funded by other organisations.

OpenAIRE is the Open Knowledge Infrastructure for Europe. It aggregates contents from Open Access repositories and improves repository interoperability. It also increases the ability of repositories to link data to publications. In addition it provides mechanisms for advice and support on Open Access, related policies and infrastructures. OpenAIRE is also the main tool of the EC to monitor the open Access policies (FP7 Open Access pilot, H2020 Open Access mandate and Open Research Data Pilot).
The accelerated proliferation of data – newly available from powerful new scientific instruments, simulations and digitization of library resources –, has created a new impetus for increasing efforts and investments in order to tackle the specific challenges of data management, and to ensure a coherent approach to research data access and preservation. EUDAT aims to address these challenges and exploit new opportunities using its vision of a Collaborative Data Infrastructure.
The Digital Curation Centre (DCC), established by Jisc, is a world-leading centre of expertise in digital information curation with a focus on building capacity, capability and skills for research data management across the UK's higher education research community. The Digital Curation Centre provides expert advice and practical help to anyone in UK higher education and research wanting to store, manage, protect and share digital research data.
DANS promotes sustained access to digital research data. For this purpose, DANS encourages researchers to archive and reuse data in a sustained manner, e.g. through it's online archiving system EASY. DANS is an institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). DANS is involved in a number of national and European research infrastructure on the ESFRI Roadmap such as DARIAH, CLARIN, CESSDA and ESS, and in related projects such as EHRI, DASISH, Data without Boundaries, OpenAire, etc.
Datacite is an international consortium that brings together the datasets community to collaboratively address the challenges of making research data visible and accessible. It supports data centres by providing persistent identifiers for datasets, workflows and standards for data publication.
The European Grid Initiative (EGI) is a partnership between National Grid Initiatives (NGIs) and a coordinating body, the EGI Organisation (EGI.eu). Within the EGI partnership, NGIs and EGI.eu work together in operating and further developing a sustainable pan-European grid infrastructure, enabling optimal sharing of computing and data resources.
Helix Nebula - the Science Cloud, will support the massive IT requirements of European scientists. The project aims to pave the way for the development and exploitation of a Cloud Computing Infrastructure, initially based on the needs of European IT-intense scientific research organisations. This pan-European partnership across academia and industry is working to establish a sustainable European cloud computing infrastructure, supported by industrial partners, which will provide stable computing capacities and services that elastically meet demand.
Dr. Sünje Dallmeier-Tiessen works at CERN as Open Science Research Fellow, partly supported by the EC through a Marie Curie "Cofund" grant. Her research investigates opportunities to enable of Open Science across disciplines, and in particular Open Data sharing. On this topic she participated to the ODE project and co-ordinates activities within the ODIN project. Within High-Energy Physics she designs and develops services to enable data sharing, data discovery and data citation within the INSPIRE digital library and beyond. She is co-chairing a RDA Data Publishing group dedicated to “workflows” to share data and has authored many articles and reports on these subjects.
Martin Donnelly is Senior Institutional Support Officer at the Digital Curation Centre, based at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. His specific interests include data management policy and planning, business process mapping, open government data, and arts and humanities data management. He was co-author of the DCC's influential 'Checklist for a Data Management Plan', project manager of the first three releases of the 'DMPonline' data management planning tool, and has published a book chapter on data management planning (in Pryor ed. (2012), Managing Research Data, Facet, London.)
Peter Doorn is director at Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS). Peter is executive board member of the Netherlands Coalition for Digital Preservation (NCDD) and of the international Alliance for Permanent Access. He represents NWO in the Science Europe Working Group on Research Data. DANS is co-chairing the RDA/WDC working group on certification of digital repositories and we were the initiators of the Data Seal of Approval. Together with the Datacentre of the three Technical Universities, DANS set up the basis for a Dutch federated data infrastructure called Research Data Netherlands (RDNL)
Dr. Tiziana Ferrari is Technical Director at EGI.eu, the organization responsible of coordinating the operations and evolution of the European Grid Initiative (EGI) - the largest scale distributed grid and cloud infrastructure offering compute and data services to support science in Europe. She is responsible of directing the EC project EGI-InSPIRE, which contributes to support the operations, technical outreach and policy development of EGI.
Bob Jones is a member of the management team of the Helix Nebula – the Science Cloud initiative (http://www.helix-nebula.eu/), a public private partnership to explore the use of commercial cloud services for science applications supported by the EC under grant 312301, for which he is the project coordinator. Bob also participates in the EIROforum IT Working Group (http://www.eiroforum.org/) and is the editor of the recently published series of e-infrastructure documents (http://zenodo.org/record/7592).
Damien Lecarpentier is a Director at CSC, the Finnish IT Center for Science, and currently manages the EUDAT project (www.eudat.eu) which aims to build a pan-European sustainable, cross-disciplinary and cross-national data infrastructure providing a set of shared services to access and preserve research data. Damien has an MA in Political Science and a PhD in Social Sciences from the Advanced School of Social Sciences in Paris. He joined CSC in 2009 as coordinator for international activities and was involved as work package and task leader in several FP7-funded projects in the areas of grids (EGI_DS), HPC (DEISA2, PRACE, EESI) and e-Infrastructure policy (e-IRGSP2, e-Infranet) before joining EUDAT.
Prof. Dr. Norbert Lossau, former Director of Göttingen State and University Library (SUB), is full-time Vice-President of Göttingen University through 2019. Within the University directorate, Prof. Dr. Norbert Lossau is in charge of the Faculty of Mathematics, the Faculty of Geoscience and Geography and Computer Science; he is also responsible for research and information infrastructure and facility management. The presentation was prepared in collaboration with the OpenAIRE team of experts.
