EU supported films in Oscar race

Six of the films competing for an Oscar in 2015 have been supported by the EU's Creative Europe programme. The six films are in total honoured with ten Oscar nominations in seven categories. The winners of the 87th Annual Academy Awards will be announced on 22 February.

The six films nominated for Oscars are from Belgium, Ireland, Poland, UK and two from France. These films have received a total support by the MEDIA sub-programme - Creative Europe of more than € 3 million.

Ida and Timbuktu are nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film.

The Polish film Ida, written and directed by Pawel Pawlikowski, was the winner of the 2014 European Film Awards. The movie is about a Polish nun Anna who is sent to see her only living relative, before she takes her vows and discovers the world outside her shelter. Ida is also nominated for the Best Cinematography.

Timbuktu, a co-production between France and Mauritania, directed by Abderrahmane Sissako, was presented at the Cannes Film Festival where it won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury. The film is picturing the jihadists' who arrived in a peaceful village of the northern Mali and heir invasion in the lives of the local inhabitants.

Mike's Leigh's already much acclaimed Mr. Turner about the English painter J.M.W. Turner, is competing for an Oscar in the categories of Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Production design and Best Costume Design.

As Best Documentary is nominated The Salt of the Earth by Wim Wender and Juliano Ribeiro Salgado – a documentary about the latter's father, the photographer Sebastião Salgado and his work.

In the category of Best Animation is nominated the Irish Song of the Sea by Tomm Moore and Paul Young, made in co-production with Denmark, Belgium, Luxembourg and France.

Marion Cotillard is nominated as Best Actress for her performance as Sandra in the Dardenne brothers' contemporary drama Two Days, One Night where she portrays a factory worker who has two days to convince her colleagues to forgo their bonuses so that she can keep her job.

The Oscar ceremony and the celebration of fresh winners will be held in Hollywood on 22 February 2015.
