The EU has invested for now around €650 million in research and development into communications network technologies.

The funded projects make intensive contributions to the research, innovation and standardisation of Future Internet infrastructure not only in the technical aspects, but also in terms of economic and social implications of networking architectures and efficient use of radio spectrum. The Future network infrastructures will provide full connectivity and access, hence the importance of supporting the convergence and interoperability of mobile/satellite and broadband.

Since the beginning of the 7th Framework Programme (FP7) in 2007, around 152 projects in communications network technologies have been launched. Since then, support has amounted to around €650 million, representing the highest single share (12%) of the total €9 billion dedicated to information and communications technologies (ICT).
