Network Technologies

Article
Network technologies are at the core of telecommunications and the Internet infrastructure. The European Commission is funding research that enables these technologies to offer Europeans an Internet for the future, where people, content and things will be connected.

The EU Framework Programme 7 (FP7) invested €100 million a year into research in network technologies and these investments continue in the new EU research Horizon 2020 programme. These EU investments support value creation in Europe in the communications network domain.

EU industrial players are recognised market leaders: 7 out of the 10 largest telecom operators, as well as the world’s major telecom manufacturers have their headquarters and origins in Europe.

Since the FP7 programme started in 2007, 207 networking projects have received about €780 million in EU funding; this is the highest share of the ICT FP7 Thematic Priority, representing €9 billion over the seven years of the programme's duration (2007-2013).

Past EU networks research investments led to the setting up of a truly European networking research community and pole of excellence.

In the future, network technology reserch findings will create big economic opportunities for EU businesses: the world market for advanced network equipment is of €300 billion a year. Technologies such as Cloud Computing, the Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Communications are also very promising fields to enhance competitiveness. Looking further, beyond the ICT sector, tremendous opportunities also exist in cross-sector links with industries such as Energy, Transport and Health.

Imagine you could experience a mobile network which offers you 100 times faster speed than today's 4G network! This is possible today thanks to the 5GNOW EU funded project. The project team succeeded to question the underlying design principles of today’s 4G network and designed, improved and tested new candidate radio waveforms to transfer wireless data.
