Monitoring and Control

Monitoring and Control (M&C) refers to the control of any system, device or network through automated procedures, managed by a control unit with or without the capability to display information.

The ‘control unit’ can be realized in many forms from actual hardware devices and components (like power switches, displays, sensors), to software products (like specialized software for devices’ communication) and to services (like maintenance, repair of a system).

The field of M&C is considered of high importance especially in application domains: environment (air, water, soil, waste), transportation (cars, aircrafts), infrastructures (construction, manufacturing industries, home automation, power networks), healthcare (health and home care) etc. The M&C systems need also to fulfil extra-functional requirements such as safety, data security, privacy or energy efficiency.  Progress and advancements in this area will have a direct impact on our everyday life.

Because Monitoring and Control technology is hidden, collecting data on its market penetration is not straightforward. With estimated revenues of more than 50B€, Europe has captured roughly one third of the global M&C market. Furthermore, it represents an important number of jobs in terms of total employment in the EU.

M&C research priorities will be supported under the Research Programme Horizon2020. They are based on key enablers for European competiveness and societal improvement generated by the M&C community:

  • How to design control for cyber-physical systems with structures that change over time and with communication links established in a limited period of time?
  • How to control autonomous systems with cognitive capabilities so to harmonize the interaction with humans?
  • How to systematically design and verify mechanisms for dynamic reconfiguration of the overall system due to the disconnection or shut-down and re-integration of subsystems?
  • How to integrate different formalisms into one environment with seamless re-use of models and integration of results obtained by different tools?
  • Human-machine interaction: how to optimally conjugate automated systems with the interplay of humans?

From the previous reseach programme, FP7, EU-funded projects targeted key challenges such as energy efficiency, performance, climate change and renewable energy sources, safety or security.

Modern equipment (cars, airplanes, wafer steppers, automatic baggage handling) is nowadays highly computerized. While designing these, one needs deep knowledge of computer programming and how the machine itself behaves, i.e. the physical behaviour. These two sources of knowledge are quite different, and it is not easy to bring them together. This is a big obstacle in development of trustworthy systems.

Seamless collaboration of building systems such as blinding, lighting and HVAC-heating, ventilation, and air conditioning -adapting to season, time of day and building occupation, hold the promise of increased energy efficiency and improved user comfort and safety.
