A decision support system for self-management of low back pain

Area: Inspiring a Digital Society (Hall X3)

Stand number: i16

A recent study showed that low back pain (LBP) is the most significant contributor to disability in Europe. Self-management in the form of physical activity and exercise is crucial; however, adherence to a self-management plan is challenging due to a lack of feedback and reinforcement.

We have therefore developed a decision support system - selfBACK - that can be used by the patient him/herself to facilitate, improve and reinforce self-management of their LBP. A mobile app gives advice tailored to each patient based on the symptom progression, the patients goal-setting, and other characteristics including information from a physical activity-detecting wristband.

The effectiveness of selfBACK is evaluated in an international randomized controlled trial (RCT) using pain-related disability as primary outcome.
