Inspiring a Digital Society (Hall X3)
Stand number: i06
U_CODE (Urban Collective Design Environment) wants to bring participation in urban design to a massive scale. Traditional participation processes involve a small number of citizens who are seldom representative for the variety of people affected by the outcome of a project, thus potentially leading to social conflicts. We aim to mitigate this dilemma by developing a digital platform which is capable of involving large numbers of diverse participants. We analysed the whole project development process and created corresponding digital tools. Seizing the opportunity offered by emerging technologies such as VR (virtual reality) interactive design, we produced new forms of architectural and urban designs and user engagement.
U_CODEs newly designed tools for co-creation and sentiment analysis feed ideas and opinions from the broad public into professional design practice. Urban designers and project developers can communicate their projects to a larger public and invite the public to contribute to it. With U_CODE, a future urban design will depart from technocratic planning. The shaping of the urban realm will become a democratic process with all civic stakeholders participating as co-creators and co-designers. We envision a future where public commitment, constructive discussion and high identification with projects will be the basis of any urban design project. U_CODE will provide the technological basis for this new kind of co-creation.
