Visualise | Discuss | Decide: A Role Game for Policy & Data Enthusiasts

Room 2.31, 06/12/2018 (11:30-12:15)

Policy making is no longer the sole preserve of political institutions and agents. Today governments have to meet evolving societal preferences for more inclusive approaches that consider the views of multiple actors, especially citizens. At the same time, there is widespread expectation that policymaking should be more agile to keep pace with a changing reality which is increasingly driven by the rapid development and expansion of emerging technologies and data. Big data analytics in particular attracted a lot of attention recently thanks to its potential to transform the way in which policies are designed and implemented. This networking session will allow participants to experience the 21st century policymaking that is evidence based and characterised by significant levels of bottom-up engagement. Working in teams, they will play with a map that uses actual traffic accident data; investigate the situation from four different perspectives; and answer policy questions based on the visualisation provided. By the end of the session, participants will

• Advance their understanding of needs, interests and priorities of different stakeholders that may explain why a particular policy may be adopted or rejected

• Learn how urban mobility challenges can be tackled through advanced visualisations

• Develop ideas for new projects that seek to promote smart urban development, mobility and open government

• Meet like-minded enthusiasts who can help implement such projects in the future
