MIDEE: Manufacturing Industry Data Economy Enablers

Room M1, 05/12/2018 (11:30-12:15)

Everybody agrees that data is the oil of our future society. As estimated by one of Digital Single Market support studies, taking away obstacles to data mobility is expected to generate an additional growth of up to 4% GDP by 2020 (Deloitte). As an integral part of its DSM policy, the European Commission has recently issued a Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on a framework for the free flow of non-personal data in the European Union (COM(2017)495 https://ec.europa.eu/digital-single-market/en/news/proposal-regulation-european-parliament-and-council-framework-free-flow-non-personal-data). The Manufacturing Industry is one of the driving sectors of our EU economy and the development of global but agile Value Networks poses new challenges in terms of partnership, collaboration and data confidentiality. On the one side Data Exchange is a precondition to remain competitive in a global economy, on the other side it is a threat for Intellectual Property and confidential knowledge. The proposed networking session will debate how Data Economy free flow of non-personal data is often limited by confidentiality constraints in critical manufacturing business processes. Which is the right balance between collaboration and confidentiality? Is the principle of Data Sovereignty fully solving the issue? Is it possible to create Open Datasets from Manufacturing Industry and stimulate applications developers ecosystems? Opportunities and Challenges?
