Mobile Empowerment for the Socio-Economic Development in South Africa
Location: INCO village
MOSAIC 2B provides a low cost mechanism to deliver multimedia content to micro-entrepreneurs (ME) located in rural areas of South Africa.
The developed framework utilises mobile technologies and low-cost ad hoc networks based on opportunistic communication to support MEs and to enhance the sustainability of their micro-enterprises. Equipped with a cinema-in-a-backpack MEs can download multimedia content and run a mobile cinema business in rural communities.
The implemented ad hoc network relies on the existing network of public transportation buses. Essential components of the network are the mobile and fixed info stations.
Using standard Internet connection, the multimedia content ordered by a ME is downloaded from the server to the fixed info station and forwarded to mobile info stations being installed in public buses serving rural communities.
