Since June 2019, Philippe Tulkens has been deputy head of the unit Climate and Planetary Boundaries in the Research and Innovation Directorate General of the European Commission. He co-manages the programming of EU research and innovation activities on climate, biodiversity and environmental observation in the Horizon 2020 and Horizon programmes, and related EU R&I policies in these areas.
Prior to this activity, he worked with a team in charge of accelerating clean energy innovation for three years and spent six years as policy assistant to the Deputy Directorate General of DG Research and Innovation in charge of Horizon Research Programmes.
He holds a Ph.D. in climate physics, and worked throughout his career at the interface between climate science and policies in academic institutions, for the Belgian government, for the Chairman of the IPCC and, since 2006, for the European Commission.
