Biography

Arnaud Chaperon graduated in marine engineering from ENSTA, a leading French engineering school. He joined Total in 1980 as a geophysicist in the Exploration Division, before being appointed to head Total’s gas business in Japan in 1987. In 1990, he was named Total's Representative in Taiwan, where he spent three years. He then returned to headquarters in Paris to lead international gas and trading activities in the Gas & Power business.
He was appointed CEO of Total E&P Qatar in 2002 as well as Group representative. After five years in Doha, Qatar, he returned to headquarters in 2007 as Senior Vice President of the Gas & Power division, with responsibility for expanding Total’s positions in new energies, especially solar and biomass/biotechnologies. In 2011, he managed the acquisition of SunPower, now one of the leading world solar company, in which Total holds a majority interest.
In biomass and biotech, he negotiated and developed a partnership with Amyris, a global biotech leader, opening up new and promising opportunities in advanced biomolecules for Total. In September 2016, he was appointed vice president European Affairs for Total Group based in Brussels.
Mr. Chaperon’s extensive experience and expertise in energy in all its aspects, and notably in energy transition, spans hydrocarbon from exploration to production, nuclear, solar energy, biomass, biotechnology, integrating renewable energies into power grids, power storage including batteries.
Mr. Chaperon sits on the Boards of Directors of the Syndicat des Energies Renouvelables (SER), as well on the Boards of CEPS (Centre d’étude et de Prospective Stratégique) and is Foreign Trade Advisor for France.
