      The objective of the consultation was to gather the views of stakeholders on the priority areas for EU digital infrastructure investments and the best ways to address existing connectivity needs with Connecting Europe Facility support. This summary report presents preliminary trends that emerge from them, focusing on the quantitative aspects of the consultation input.The Commission is now carrying out a deeper analysis of the replies received. The results will feed into the Commission's proposals and discussions on the implementation of the programme, to begin in 2021.

      The Broadband Coverage in Europe study is designed to monitor the progress of EU Member States towards the specific broadband coverage objectives set out in the Digital Agenda for Europe – namely: ‘Universal Broadband Coverage with speeds at least 30 Mbps by 2020’ and ‘Broadband take-up of 50% of households with speeds at least 100 Mbps by 2020’.

      The 2018 Activity Report of the European Broadband Competence Offices (BCOs) Network presents the year’s knowledge-sharing and capacity-building programme under the objectives of: connecting, sharing knowledge and building capacity; growing at regional level; and strengthening the Network. The programme included events, publications and video interviews dedicated to increasing the capacity of European BCOs to bring broadband connectivity to all citizens. A focus of the BCO Network is supporting bridging the digital gap between urban and rural areas and reaching the Gigabit Society objectives.

      The European Commission has just published a study on the implementation and monitoring of the Broadband Cost Reduction Directive. The Directive (2014/61/EU) aims to reduce the costs of deploying fast broadband networks through facilitating shared use and coordinated deployment of physical infrastructure such as ducts and poles within the electronic communications sector and across other sectors including energy, transport and water.

      This study is designed to monitor the progress of EU Member States towards their specific broadband coverage objectives: 'Universal Broadband Coverage with speeds at least 30 Mbps by 2020' and 'Broadband Coverage of 50% of households with speeds at least 100 Mbps by 2020'. The collected data shows that over 219 million EU households (99.9%) had access to at least one of the main fixed or mobile broadband access technologies at the end of June 2017 (excluding satellite).
