Description / Explanation
This project connected 100% of the houses, in its defined area, to the broadband network. All houses in Lauchhammer districts of Grünewalde; Kostebrau and Kleinleipisch were connected with open pipes which allowed the glass fibre conductors to be blown in and the active components installed. Thus, a structured, fail-safe, sustainable FTTH (Fibre to the home) technology was built. The same technology had already been used in a part of the urban area Lauchhammer. High speed internet access is then assured thanks to branch lines extending from the backbone to the nearest cable distribution box.

Infrastructure & Service
Infrastructure, technology and architecture
All houses in districts of Grünewalde, Kostebrau and Kleinleipisch were connected with open pipes. The optic fibre conductors were blown in and the active components installed. A structured, fail-safe, sustainable FTTH (Fibre to the home) technology was built. Same technology had already been used in a part of the urban area of Lauchhammer and was developed via FTTH technology. With this kind of fibre optic network, the conditions were created for the latest generation of broadband connections to reach regions and communities like Lauchhammer. Rapid access to the internet is assured thanks to branch lines extending from the backbone to the nearest cable distribution box. With the same technology, all parts of the Lauchhammer urban area are being developed via FTTH technology. Broadband speeds after project implementation are: Gigabit download and 200 Mbps upload.
Financing
Cost structure and financing sources
The main investment is taken by the company LKG. In the first step, implementation was supported by 15% of total investment. In the second stage, no subsidies were used and this will remain so until the development and extension of the fibre-optic network around Lauchhammer is completed.
Scalability
Actors involved and their roles
LKG-Lauchhammer GmbH (main Investor): investor for digital infrastructure and active components
MITNETZ-STROM mbH - Regional Brandenburg( local electricity producer): responsible to lay underground cable for the energy supplies of the households
Stadtverwaltung Lauchhammer - Bürgermeister Roland Pohlenz: responsible for the street lighting
WAL - Wasserverband Lausitz: Water board
LMBV-GmbH - Lausitzer- und Mitteldeutsche: restoration of the mining landscape
ILB-Investionsbank des Landes Brandenburg : responsible or funds

Unique characteristics
In this project, it was possible to coordinate all measures of the modernization of the urban infrastructure and to make use of comprehensive synergy effects.
Success factors
The project had to meet five specific characteristics to ensure success:
1. The population of the area must fully stand behind it;
2. The promotion of the open pipes in public areas was an important impetus at the start of the entire project;
3. Companies, which are involved in the modernization of urban infrastructure, are ready to synchronize their upcoming measures;
4. The city administration also has to provide support in overcoming bureaucratic hurdles and also to implement its own projects (earth cabling, road lighting);
5. The most important point in the project is, however, that there is a company taking over the entire economic risk for the development, construction and operation of the broadband network. In Lauchhammer the company LKG-Lauchhammer takes that part over.

Results
Within the framework of the project ,100% houses were connected to the FTTH network.
Technical potential for expansion, future proof infrastructure
Networking at the highest technical level is already very advanced in the entire urban area of Lauchhammer. In a survey conducted by the OSL county, 94% of households with a data linkage of 50 Mbps and more have already been established. 50 Mbps will not be sufficient in a few years. The map "Fibre-Optic City Lauchhammer" shows how future-proof and thus sustainable the city is positioned because of the broadband strategy pursued. Today, 25 % of all households are directly connected via the Ftth technology and achieve services of up to 1 Gbps. The remaining buildings are connected via Fttc and Coax. Users can already apply for services of 200 Mbps today.
