EU-funded films are this year once again in the running for the coveted statuette.
In particular, three films supported by Creative Europe MEDIA, the EU programme supporting the audiovisual industry, have gathered five nominations in four different categories.
The film “Les Misérables” by Ladj Ly and “Pain and Glory” by Pedro Almodóvar will be competing for the award of "Best International Feature Film". The latter got a second nomination thanks to the role of the main character, Antonio Banderas, who aims for the award of "Best Actor in a leading role".
The third nominated film is “Judy” by Rubert Goold, which also got two nominations: "Best actress in a leading role" for the work done by Renée Zellweger, and "Best makeup and hairstyle".
The three films received MEDIA support for their distribution across countries in Europe.
In the last years, films supported by the MEDIA programme brought the Oscars home, including "Call me by your name", "Amour", "La Grande Bellezza", "Son of Saul", "Slumdog Millionnaire" or, more recently, "The Favourite" in 2019.
