On 11 January 2016, the European Regulators Group for Audiovisual Media Services (ERGA) issued a statement on the necessity of independent media.

The statement was drafted in the light of the recent developments in Poland.  It states that ERGA welcomes the actions already taken by the European Commission and calls on it to continue to actively monitor developments and to take firm action to support a free and independent media. 

ERGA stresses the crucial role played by the audiovisual media in promoting the free flow of information and ideas to strengthen our democracies by enabling citizens to take decisions with the full knowledge of facts.

ERGA also recommends that the upcoming review of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive include stronger safeguards for the independence of national regulatory authorities, as a means of protecting our free and open societies

On the same day, ERGA also published a Report on the Independence of the National Reglatory Authorities (NRA’s).
