The Commission held a public consultation on the independence of the audiovisual regulatory bodies from March to June 2013.

The purpose of this consultation was to collect views on the issue of independence of regulatory bodies competent for audiovisual media services and on possible options for strengthening their independence, including a possible revision of Article 30 of the 2010/13/EU Directive on Audiovisual Media Services (AVMSD).

Free and pluralistic media are amongst the EU's most essential democratic values. In this context it aims at examining the role that the independent audiovisual regulatory bodies can play for the preservation of these values when acting within the scope of the AVMSD.
