Following the launch of the Cyrillic .ею extension in June 2016, users will now also have the opportunity to create a domain name in full Greek script, such as ευρώ.ευ (euro.eu). Existing domain names with Greek characters under .eu will have 3 years to migrate to the new extension.
Now available in every alphabet used throughout the EU, the popularity of .eu is expected to grow further. It is currently the seventh largest country code extension on the internet, with 3.7 million EU citizens and businesses using a domain name under the reliable, trustworthy and secure .eu extension.
The launch of the .ευ domain is an example of the Commission’s attachment to multilingualism and commitment to promoting the European identity across the continent. After all, the ability to register domain names in non-Latin scripts is essential for languages such as Greek and Bulgarian.
