Green, renewable Energy is fundamental to European growth. A large portion of this will come from wind energy. Reducing the production costs of Wind Energy will accelerate this technology and its adoption. VirtuWind proposes innovative application of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) in wind parks. This will reduce capital invest (CAPEX) in turbine control components and will reduce operational & Maintenance (OPEX) costs over the lifetime of the turbines.

VirtuWind will provide Software-Defined Networking (SDN) / Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) solutions applicable in all industrial branches, to strengthen Europe’s industrial potential and competitiveness.

VirtuWind relies on 5G for network programmability, re-configurability and multi-tenant capability. That's why, in the VirtuWind demo, an industrial control application is shown by means of Human Machine Interface (HMI) panel. It controls a model wind turbine over the SDN network. There are 2 scenarios which are shown in the demo. In the first scenario, the control application gets guaranteed bandwidth as compared to Video and Data traffic. In the second scenario, a failover path for the control application is programmed in the SDN network; this way, in case of link failure, the control application remains unaffected (whereas Video and Data traffic gets disturbed). In summary, SDN network allows programming of the network parameters and path as per application needs.

VirtuWind can directly benefit several areas of industry, such as the energy sector, Industry automation, Smart Grid, and Smart Transportation. The simplified network operation and lowered CAPEX & OPEX costs in network could help wind energy to see more deployments in pursuit of a 27% share of renewable energy in the EU by 2030. The expected increase in the demand for wind turbines and wind parks should also boost job availability in the sector.
