Given the current worldwide situation, the deadlines of two FET-Proactive calls have been extended until 2 July 2020. The calls aim at supporting research and innovation projects boosting emerging technologies.

FET-Proactive Calls: Deadlines set on 2 July 2020

The procedure and further conditions were presented at the Info-Day Webinar dedicated to the European Innovation Council (EIC) Pilot: EIC Pathfinder and Accelerator 2020 calls.

Emerging paradigms & communities (FETPROACT-EIC-07-2020)

The call looks for cutting-edge high-risk / high-reward research and innovation projects, which demonstrate a new technological paradigm with game changing potential. The proposers should be able to establish a solid baseline of knowledge and skills, assemble interdisciplinary communities (including the disciplines as social sciences and humanities), or create a fertile ground for co-design and future take-up of technological paradigm within the scope of one of the following sub-topics:

  • Artificial Intelligence for extended social interaction
  • Breakthrough zero-emissions energy storage and conversion technologies for carbon-neutrality
  • Digital twins for the life-sciences
  • Measuring the unmeasurable – Sub-nanoscale science for Nanometrology

FET Proactive has its specific evaluation criteria, thresholds and weights: excellence (threshold: 4/5, weight: 60%), impact (threshold: 3.5/5, weight: 20%) and implementation (threshold: 3/5, weight: 20%). Total budget is €56 million. At least €12 million will be allocated to each of the sub-topics.

Environmental Intelligence(FETPROACT-EIC-08-2020)

The specific challenge of this topic aims at building a deeper understanding of the socioenvironmental inter-relationships (e.g. by testing and validating complex theoretical models) and creating new synergies between distant communities of environmental modelling, advanced sensor research, social sciences, and artificial intelligence. Another field of interest consists in taking critical steps towards the realisation of a full-fledged system for environmental intelligence. The call looks for:

  • New techniques for creating and using dynamic models of environmental evolution
  • Radically novel approaches to resilient, reliable and environmentally responsible in-situ monitoring

The evaluation criteria are the same as the ones mentioned above: excellence (threshold: 4/5, weight: 60%), impact (threshold: 3.5/5, weight: 20%) and implementation (threshold: 3/5, weight: 20%). Total budget amounts €18 million.

Background

FET is a 30 years-old programme of the European Commission focusing on funding basic research and visionary science in Europe. FET actions initiate radically new lines of technology through unexplored collaborations between advanced multidisciplinary science and cutting-edge engineering. One of its actions is called FET Proactive. FET Proactive nurtures emerging themes, seeking to establish a critical mass of European researchers in a number of promising exploratory research topics. This supports areas that are not yet ready for inclusion in industry research roadmaps, with the aim of building up and structuring new interdisciplinary research communities.

FET-Open and FET-Proactive are now part of the Enhanced EIC Pilot (specifically the Pathfinder), the new home for deep-tech research and innovation in Horizon 2020, the EU funding programme for research and innovation.
