Approaches intended to reduce the number of animals used in toxicity testing

A lot of data is available describing how toxic a substance is under particular circumstances. If these data are integrated into coherent frameworks, it is possible to extend their applicability and extrapolation potential.

Using test data from water fleas (Daphnia magna), researchers Jose-Manuel Zaldivar and Joaquin Baraibar from the EC Joint Research Center, Institute for Health and Consumer Protection (JRC-IHCP) evaluated whether it was possible to extrapolate from acute (short-term) to chronic (long-term) toxicity. This approach could easily be extended to other standardized test by replacing the D. magna DEB model with the corresponding species model (fish, birds, etc.). Reuse of data would reduce the time and costs of tests, as well as the number of animals necessary.
