The 76th Venice Film Festival closed the curtain last week. 12 films supported by the MEDIA programme – the EU's programme for supporting the European film and audiovisual industries – competed at the festival and five of them were rewarded with prestigious prizes.

Four of the twelve MEDIA-supported films selected in Venice were shortlisted to compete in the main section and two of them were rewarded with major prizes. The Silver Lion for Best Director was awarded to Roy Andersson for ‘About Endlessness’. The Sweden/Germany/Norway coproduction received €52.800 of MEDIA funding for its distribution.

In addition, Luca Marinelli was awarded with the ‘Coppa Volpi’ for Best Actor for his role in ‘Martin Eden’ by Pietro Marcello (Italy, France). The film received €30.000 of MEDIA support for its distribution in France.

In the Orizzonti Competition, which is dedicated to latest trends in international cinema, two films supported by the EU’s programme were also awarded: the Orizzonti Award for Best Director went to Théo Court for ‘Blanco en blanco’ (a coproduction with Spain, Chile, France, Germany which received €30.000 MEDIA funding for development) and the Orizzonti Award for Best Actress went to Marta Nieto for her role in ‘Madre’ by Rodrigo Sorogoyen (a coproduction of Spain and France which got €65.000 of MEDIA funding for distribution).

Finally, one of the emerging talents supported by the programme, Amjad Abu Alala, saw his debut film rewarded with the prize Lion of the Future. The film ‘You Will Die at 20', received €50.000 of MEDIA funding under the international co-production funds scheme.
