The South-Italian region of Puglia is a good example of how people in remote regions can benefit from EU support in this field. To recognise its exemplary approach the Commission included Puglia region on the list of 74 leaders advancing innovation for active and healthy ageing across Europe.

In May 2015, the European Commission presented a strategy to create a Digital Single Market where people and businesses can make the most of what digitalisation offers. This includes EU actions to support innovation for active and healthy ageing.

Supported by the SmartHealth2.0 Puglia strategy, local SMEs and researchers have developed new innovative products and filed
several patents. For example, the Hospital at home eHealth system from Puglia is currently on the market in Europe and the US. This system reduced hospitalisation cost by 41%. The region also used €45 million from EU cohesion funds to roll-out the technology for remote monitoring of Chronic Kidney Disease patients.
