News about Quantum

The mechanical phenomenon of entanglement, or "spooky action at a distance", as Einstein put it in 1935, has been proven to be real. Not only for atom-size objects, but for objects that are almost large enough to be visible to the naked eye: this possibility was unthinkable until now. This discovery was made by the HOT project based in Finland, supported by the European Union's Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) programme.

QuantERA is a network of 32 organisations from 26 countries, coordinated by the National Science Centre, Poland, supporting research in Quantum Technologies (QT). With a budget of € 36 M, including co-funding from the European Commission, QuantERA will support international research projects in the field of QT. The results of a joint call for proposals for international research groups operating in QuantERA partner countries have now been published.

A new step has been reached in the implementation of the FET Flagship on Quantum Technologies announced one year ago, with the adoption on 24th of April of an update of the Horizon 2020 FET Work Programme 2016-2017, which now includes a call for proposals for a Coordination and Support Action to support the community in establishing the flagship initiative and its coordination with national activities in the field.

Our responsibility, within the expert group on Quantum Technology Flagship, is to recommend to the Commission a strategic agenda and an efficient model for the future Flagship, by June 2017. To deliver, we need to hear from the community. This is why we organised a workshop in Berlin on 10 November 2016.

Following the nomination of the chair and of the academic members, and after the publication in September of a dedicated call for selecting industrial members, the Commission Expert Group chaired by Prof. J. Mlynek is now complete with the addition of 12 representatives from key industries and companies.

Following the nomination of the chair, Prof. Mlynek, the Commission has now formally set-up the Commission Expert Group, with 13 very high level academic members, that will provide recommendations on the preparation of the Quantum Technology Flagship .
