231 new IST research projects are about to be launched. This is the culmination of the €1 billion investment in IST research first announced last September. The last contractual details are currently being finalised, so that most of the projects can start by January 1st. These projects resulted from the first call for proposals for Information Society Technologies (IST) projects under the EU’s Sixth Framework Research Programme (FP6). The 1 B€ is the single largest award of its kind in the history of the European Union. Projects address developments in a number of key areas such as Mobile services beyond 3G, Micro and nano-systems, network security and new multimodel interface. Other projects support the goals stated in the eEurope2005 Action Plan by targeting in Broadband for all and services within e-Government and eHealth.
A total of 1186 proposals have just been received in response to the 2nd call for proposals for the IST, which closed on 15 October. These are currently being evaluated and the evaluation report should be ready in the first half of January.
