This year's meeting was as a success and included a number of "surprises". There was a large participation with very interesting and relevant input from all participants.

On 1 - 2 March 2016 a successful Public Private Partnership Annual Meeting, took place in Brussel. The European Photonics community met and shared its views, having the opportunity to be informed about the upcoming European political agenda, as presented by the Commissioner G. Oettinger and the latest on the industry visions by several C-level executives. As planned, a large part of the meeting was devoted to debating about the priorities for the next Work Programme. This year the first projects funded under the H2020 were also invited to present, in order to share their experience, to network their competence and inspire synergies. In the upcoming months the Working Group will further elaborate their views and proposals. Please refer to the Photonics21 website to keep updated.

During the meeting on March 2nd, Wolfgang Boch announced his retirement. During a highly appreciated and emotional speech, he told the Photonics Community that this was the last time he would address them as Head of Unit. He received a well-deserved, minute long applause from the entire community showing his work was much appreciated. During the last months of his career, he has encouraged the Photonics PPP to work out and present a strategic vision for the upcoming years that will be of benefit for the entire Community. After a career of over 26 years in the European Commission, Wolfgang decided it was time for a change in his life. For the time being the Deputy Head of Unit, Ronan Burgess, will take over his function until a new Head of Unit for Photonics is appointed. Ronan is very well known and appreciated throughout the Community and we wish him all the best with this new challenge.
