Kaspars Gerhards was appointed as Minister for Environmental Protection and Regional Development of the Republic of Latvia in November 2014. The Ministry is responsible for implementing policy in three areas - environment protection, regional development as well as information society and e-government.
Previously Gerhards held the positions of Minister for Economics and Minister for Transport and Communications; he also served as State Secretary at the Ministry of Economics for 8 years.
Since 2008 Gerhards is a member of one of the oldest political parties in Latvia – “For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK”.
Gerhards was born in Jelgava in 1969. He graduated from the Faculty of Economics at University of Latvia. He has also studied at Westphalia Wilhelms University and Goethe Institute in Germany.
