Hacking for Humanity is a global event, whose purpose is to empower “Girls Who Code” and “Girls in Tech Romania's women community, improve collaboration through the participation of mixed teams, ideally 50% women and 50% men, by solving local social issues and driving tech innovation into NGOs.

It is one of the most important and loved event organised by “Girls Who Code” and “Girls in Tech Romania”, as it brings together technology and social issues, and it brings women and men together to collaborate and work towards solving tangible social issues.

Hacking for Humanity Romania 2018 hackathon took place on June 22nd - 24th and was organised by the Romanian chapter of “Girls in Tech” and “Girls Who Code Romania”.

It brought together 12 teams of hackers and 3 NGOs working for 2.5 days towards solving problems related to Ecology, Autism and Natural Disasters.

The teams developed solutions to solve the social issues presented by the NGOs, with the help of the expert mentors from the sponsoring companies. At the end of the hackathon, each team pitched their solution in front of a jury of selected experts who chose a winner for each NGO.

Success factors

There are multiple success factors:

  1. Bringing together girls and boys to work in teams and solve social issues;
  2. Helping local NGOs through their solutions;
