Rural development programme of Greece 2007-2013: The Hellenic Telecommunications and Posts Commission introduced the programme Rural broadband for Development of broadband infrastructures in rural “white” areas of Greece. These 5.100 white areas cover approximately 40% of the Greek territory and especially, villages and isolated islands.

Unique characteristics
The project follows a PPP (Public and Private Partnership) model, trying in this way to take advantage of all the possible available sources in order to allow the realization of the project, the utilization in the future promoting in the same time the competition.
The operators will not offer services directly to final users but only services to other operators. The final users will get offers from third parties and operators.
Success factors
In order to implement the project the country was divided into three sections:
LOT 1: OTE (Thrace, Macedonia, western Epirus, Northern Aegean) : 44.375.478 EUR
LOT 2: INTRAKAT – INTRACOM HOLDINGS – HELLAS ON LINE (Thessaly, Eastern Central Greece, Southern Epirus, Evvoia, Cyclades): 60.315.940 EUR
LOT 3: OTE (Peloponnesus, Central Greece, Dodecanese, Crete): 56.385.614 EUR

Project review

The project will help a lot in the local economical evolution, will improve many services, open new job opportunities, help the businesses and of course improve the living conditions for locals and tourists.
Short description of added value
The goal of the project is fast internet in these areas until 2015 connecting hundred thousands of people that have no or very poor connections. The programmes follows the goals of “The Digital Agenda in Europe”.
