Description / Explanation

The North of Portugal represents a more dispersed settlement pattern, where people live in valleys and mountains with poor accessibility. Thus, the development of a high speed telecommunication infrastructure in this geographical area creates new paths of knowledge where access to telecommunication is limited and with a very low bandwidth penetration rate. The South (Alentejo and Algarve), on the other hand, is one of the regions with the highest amount of tourists in the country. The network was built based on a new generation of cable, the NextGen, developed and patented specifically for these regions of low population and high dispersity. This innovative cable contains 24, 48 and 96 distribution fibers and a single-fiber tube 12 to DROP fibers. SMEs are both located in the North and South of Portugal. As they are major contributors to growth on a municipal as well as regional level, their competitiveness, management practices and innovation are core values for the success of the companies in the global market. This project has contributed to the development of these regions with info-inclusion.
