Director General of DG CONNECT at the European Commission

    Roberto Viola

We are CONNECT(ed): we live and work connected strongly to the dynamically changing reality, following and shaping new trends and tech developments in the EU and in the world. And we constantly adapt our organisation to reflect the challenges of digital innovation. Therefore, we have decided to introduce some changes in DG CONNECT organigramme as of 1 July 2018.

We have decided to focus even more on disruptive technologies which are in the heart of the digital transformation, in particular in the field of artificial intelligence and blockchain. Our directorate that deals with digital industry will change name and will have an increased focus on AI. The Directorate will be named Artificial Intelligence and Digital Industry. It will have the mission to coordinate a team effort in implementing the Commission’s AI stategy, in cooperation with the Member States, other institutions and stakeholders.

Blockchain is a distruptive innovation that holds many promises to be a real game changer. From 1st of July we have a unit on “Digital Innovation and Blockchain” that will focus on the development of the blockchain technology, working with the newly founded Observatory towards the implementation of the Declaration signed by the Member States during the Digital Day 2018 on 10 April. The unit will keep a strong focus on supporting a vibrant startup community.

We have reinforced DG CONNECT's capacity in the area of Cybersecurity. We will dedicate more attention and resources to policy and capacity in Cybersecurity in order to step up our response to cybersecurity threats and strenghten fight against cybercrime in Europe. We doubled our efforts with two new units: 'Cybersecurity Technology & Capacity Building' dealing with competence and technology as well as operational matters and cybesecurity capacity building in the EU;  'Cybersecurity & Digital Privacy Policy' dealing with the cyber and digital privacy legislation such as the implementstion of the NIS Directive, Cybersecurity Act and ePrivacy.

The rest of the organisation remained unchanged and also unchanged it is our commitment to complete the EU Digital Single Market and not to work in isolation. For example in fintech, digital health care and connected mobility we will continue to work hand in hand with all the other Commission directorates general.

Stay tuned, a lot to come in the coming months!
