eDelivery and Simpl join forces to boost secure data exchanges in European Data Spaces

We are working with Simpl to make secure data exchanges easier in European data spaces. A feasibility study is exploring how to connect Simpl-Open with eDelivery. A proof of concept will show how AS4-based transfers can work through Simpl.

In a significant stride towards enhancing secure data exchanges across European data spaces, the eDelivery team is currently collaborating with the Simpl initiative to facilitate the use of the well-established and widely deployed AS4 secure exchange protocol in the context of data spaces built using Simpl-Open. The latter is the middleware designed to support the development of European data spaces that enables the collaboration among users, such as data providers, data consumers, infrastructure and application providers within a decentralized system.

A commitment towards secure and reliable data exchanges across European data spaces

Currently, a feasibility study is underway, exploring how eDelivery can be embedded within the Simpl-Open architecture and defining the most effective technical approach for this integration. The integration will be through the data plane, the architectural layer responsible for facilitating actual data transfers once a data exchange agreement is concluded.

With shared efforts towards innovation and interoperability, the teams are co-developing a proof of concept (PoC) implementation for carrying out an AS4 exchange triggered from the Simpl-Open middleware. This PoC seeks to demonstrate the means of reusing eDelivery within Simpl-Open, with the goal of lifting eDelivery-based data exchanges into European data spaces. The PoC will emulate the use of eDelivery in a specific use case in a static configuration of two eDelivery Access Points. The teams will be looking into the scenario where a data provider, via a resource description published in the data space catalogue, allows eDelivery transfer of a given data set to a data consumer. On request, the data is accessed from the storage of the data provider's backend application and packaged as an AS4 envelope to be sent to the data consumer.

This integration effort underscores eDelivery’s continuous commitment to supporting all manners of use of the AS4 protocol in digital ecosystem across Europe. By embedding the eDelivery protocol within the Simpl-Open architecture, we are poised to bring AS4-based secure data exchanges also to European data spaces. As the work proceeds, ensuring shared success throughout this transformative journey remains a priority.

What is Simpl?

Simpl is a pioneering initiative aimed at fostering interoperability and secure data exchange across European data spaces. It consists of an open-source and secure middleware platform that supports seamless data access. Simpl is committed to ensuring that data components meet a uniform standard of quality, providing the necessary tools, governance frameworks, and legal infrastructure to facilitate seamless and trustworthy data access. By offering compatible components that adhere to these standards, Simpl supports the creation of secure, open, and adaptable data spaces, facilitating collaboration within and between sectors.

The Simpl initiative comprises three core products:
