<h2 class="heading-deco terciary">Overview</h2>
<p>The verification of legal entities and their attributes in the EU can be difficult; establishing trust can be complicated and time-consuming. Seamless verification, necessary for digital information ownership, remains a challenge. The European Commission will explore these issues in a new event, tackling the many hurdles of the verification process for legal entities. Diverse stakeholders will come together to brainstorm potential cross-border solutions to these problems.</p>

<p>The European Commission's Directorate-General for Digital Services (DIGIT) is organising a conference on  22 February 2024, in Brussels, Belgium, that aims to explore challenges legal entities encounter in proving ownership of digital information and  to seek potential solutions with a focus on the role of Web3 technologies. Before that he was a policy officer in charge of the validation of non-formal and informal learning and career guidance. Other positions he held within the European Commission were that of Erasmus Mundus Programme Manager and of policy officer in charge of setting up a European Executive Agency in charge of implementing programmes in education, training, culture and media. Before joining the Commission in 2003 Koen worked at the University of Antwerp (researcher) and at the European Institute of Public Administration in Maastricht (the Netherlands). Koen studied public policy and public administration at the University of Twente (NL) and holds a Master degree in European Studies from the College of Europe.</p>

<p>Marc Taverner is the Executive Director of the International Association for Trusted Blockchain Applications (<a href="http://inatba.org/">inatba.org</a>), the pre-eminent nonprofit organisation supporting the growth of DLT & blockchain technologies. INATBA does this by engaging public and private audiences to address and reduce frictions that inhibit market growth. As executive director, Marc works with INATBA’s Members to host bilateral conversations between governments (including the European Commission) and companies to inform policies and regulations and advance the international adoption of blockchain.</p>
<p>Most recently, INATBA, under Marc’s leadership, has been working to respond to the European Commission’s proposed Digital Finance Package, engaging with members and governments worldwide to discuss the future of blockchain and crypto-asset regulation. Marc has been active in the global blockchain ecosystem for more than six years, working across 20 countries, engaging with organisations from governments and financial institutions, to large corporates and industry associations. Prior to joining INATBA, he was the Global Ambassador and head of Business Development for the Bitfury Group, one of Europe’s largest blockchain unicorns.</p>
<p>To INATBA he brings a unique set of experiences gained from a career in start-ups and industry-leading companies. The founder of a successful modem distribution company, Nuvo, Marc has held leadership roles with many top technology companies, including Genesys Conferencing, the world's largest provider of unified communications services, and Promethean, a market leader in educational technology solutions.</p>

<p>Sebastiano Toffaletti heads the Brussels secretariat of the European DIGITAL SME Alliance, which he contributed to found in 2008. DIGITAL SME is Europe's largest association for digital Small and Medium sized Enterprises, representing about 45.000 companies across the continent. The association covers EU initiatives, legislation and policies related to topics such as cybersecurity and privacy, data economy, IoT, Artificial Intelligence and blockchain. In 2019, DIGITAL SME published its Manifesto for Europe’s digital future highlighting 10 key priorities and the role of SMEs in the digital revolution.</p>
<p>Sebastiano authored several articles and position papers on topics such as Intellectual Property Rights, Standards, data economy and digital skills, and serves as an expert in EU working groups and task forces, where he brings forward the interests and views of SMEs. He is a member of the EU multi-stakeholder Platform on ICT standardisation. He is currently chairman of the Working Group on SMEs at the European Cybersecurity Organisation and has led the creation of the label “Cybersecurity made in the EU” in support of SME cybersecurity providers .</p>
<p>Since 2014, Sebastiano is a member of the Board at ETSI, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute. Since 2020, Sebastiano is also a Board member of EIF, the European Internet Forum.</p>

<p>Katrien Vanelven studied Ancient History and graduated with a master’s degree from KU Leuven. She joined KU Leuven’s International Policy Unit in 2009, as Advisor on Europe and North America. She coordinated KU Leuven’s participation in Erasmus Mundus Action 2 and Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility.</p>
<p>Since spring 2018, she has been contributing to the establishment of Una Europa, an alliance of 11 European universities. In Una Europa’s 1Europe project, she leads the work package ‘The European University Ecosystem’, creating a sustainable ecosystem in which Una Europa can thrive. The supporting technology and infrastructure is put in place to support smooth administrative processes, to support access for students and staff to all services within Una Europa and to support blended and virtual education.</p>
<p>The partners in the Una Europa alliance join forces to further elaborate and test blockchain technology to register and exchange credits obtained by students during an exchange period at a partner university as well as for the authentication of digital degree certificates.</p>

				IDunion members that are collectively operating a decentralized network
				for digital identities. He has been collaborating with EBSI since 2023
				where he leads a working group within EBSI-VECTOR about cross-border
				business registries. Christian and his team of 12 identity experts from
				12 different EU member states explore challenges and opportunities for
				legal entities. Their work will result in new capabilities for the
				EBSI-technology.

				design and implementation of the relevant systems as well as the use of
				data to serve all ESMA’s stakeholders. In its role, Giulia is
				coordinating the data policy work in the area of digital finance,
				notably with the development of the data record keeping requirements for
				CASPs under MiCA. This is the dataset envisaged by MiCA that will need
				to be collected and used by EU supervisors for monitoring crypto
				markets.

				coordination of industrial and competition policy, the design of policy
				measures to improve SME access to digital finance and conceptual work on

				Joachim holds a PhD from Dresden University of Technology and was
				Post-Doc Research fellow at the London School of Economics' Economic
				History Department before he joined the European Commission in 2001.

				Pierre Marro is Policy Officer at the Directorate General Communication
				Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT) of the European
				Commission.He works for the unit "Digital Innovation and Blockchain", as team
				leader for Blockchain. He is notably in charge of the European
				Blockchain Partnership (EBP) and the European Blockchain Services
				Infrastructure.

				Stephan Wolf is the CEO of the Global Legal Entity Identifier
				Foundation. In 2023, he was elected as a member of the Board of the
				International Chamber of Commerce Germany. In 2021, he was appointed to
				an Industry Advisory Board as part of the global ICC Digital Standards
				Initiative. In that capacity, he serves as co-chair of the workstream on
				‚Trusted Technology Environment‘. Between January 2017 and June 2020,
				Mr. Wolf was Co-convener of the International Organization for
				Standardization Technical Committee 68 FinTech Technical Advisory Group.
				In January 2017, Mr. Wolf was named one of the Top 100 Leaders in
				Identity by One World Identity. Mr. Wolf co-founded IS Innovative
				Software GmbH in 1989 and served first as its managing director. He was
				later named spokesman of the executive board of its successor,
				IS.Teledata AG. Mr. Wolf holds a university degree in business
				administration from J. W. Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main.

				Steve is Vice chair, UN/CEFACT and project lead for “transparency at
				scale” UNECE recommendation 49 and associated “UN Transparency Protocol"
				technical implementation guidance. The UNTP defines a decentralised
				traceability and transparency architecture that emphasises protocol over
				platform and includes standards for digital product passport, product
				conformity certificates, and traceability events. It also includes a
				digital trust architecture based on W3C verifiable credentials and
				authoritative “trust anchors".
