Major milestone – third 2023 Once-Only Projectathon wrapsup

On 18-20 October 2023, the third Once-Only Technical System Projectathon brought together 24 EU Member States for a marathon of peer-to-peer interoperability testing. This was the final of three such events in 2023. Projectathons facilitate crucial development, testing and eventual deployment of national Once-Only Technical System implementations.

This Projectathon was a major milestone, coming two months before the legal deadline for Member States to implement the Once-Only Technical System. This deadline is set out in the Single Digital Gateway Regulation, which expressly calls for the creation of this Technical System to help digitalise the internal market.

In addition to testing, Member States experts collaborated on improving the Once-Only Technical System user experience, learned about lifecycle management for the Once-Only Common Services, updates to the Semantic Repository. Moreover, Austria, the Netherlands and Germany presented how they are piloting the Once-Only Technical System in the business sector.

The Once-Only Technical System lets EU public authorities securely exchange official documents and data at the request of citizens and businesses as part of cross-border administrative procedures, e.g., when registering an address or vehicle when moving abroad. Once-Only eliminates the often complex manual search, mapping, and fetching of data between Member State authorities. Once-Only improves efficiency, makes people's lives easier, and reduces the costs of mobility within the Single Market.

On the first day of the October Projectathon, participating Member States executed more tests between their national Once-Only implementations than during the entire June 2023 Projectathon, clearly highlighting the great value of such events.

The Commission will publish an event report for the October Projectathon shortly. In the meantime, you can consult the June Once-Only Technical Projectathon event report, summarising key results from the testing that took place from 14-16 June 2023.

Following this Projectathon, the focus now turns to the go-live of the Once-Only Technical System and its operational deployment.
