Veronica Gaffey, Director-General for Digital Services (DIGIT) and Amaryllis Verhoeven, Head of Unit for Digital transformation of industry (DG GROW) symbolically launching the Once-Only Technical System.

The 12 December 2023 is the legal deadline for Member States to implement the Once-Only Technical System, as set- out in the Single Digital Gateway Regulation.

This new EU-wide technical system will allow Member States to handle cross-border administrative tasks more efficiently and eliminate persistent transaction costs that remain after the digitisation of public services. Whether it is a citizen changing their address or businesses obtaining essential permits to provide services in another country, this system will enable Member States to get the required evidence directly from the official registries, upon a citizen or business’ request.

In simple terms, Once-Only replaces the need for the user to search and download evidence for the sole purpose of re-uploading it in another governmental website (meaning it is uploaded “only once”). Once-Only embodies the European values of user-centricity and personal control of ones data.

On 11-12 December 2023, representatives of 25 EU Member States joined aan OOTS “Go-Live Accelerator”. This event consisted of two elements running in parallel:

Training of persons responsible for entering data into the Common Services and;

Readiness Checks (of national implementations, with the presence of various support teams).

This Go-Live Accelerator marked the transition from a system in development to a live Europe-wide infrastructure with the Once-Only Common Services ready to be used by Member States.
