“Bring Your Own Identity” (BYOI) is a growing trend in the world of access management and user identification. Under this trend a single digital identity is re-used to provide access to multiple different services from different providers either in the public or private sector. A growing number of private sector organisations are providing BYOI solutions for their users, including Social media Companies, Financial Institutions or banks, Mobile network operators; Digital identity companies; and Digital Identity networks.

This paper "Bring Your Own Identity - Business trends for eID" provides an overview of the approaches taken by these private sector BYOI providers. It concludes with some possible lessons and considerations for public-sector providers of eID solutions.

  1. CEF EID Hello,

Thank you for this detailed report.

Do you know if there is a European rule or local regulations that describe who can access to the biometric information such as the photo from the eID chip (in addition to the law enforcement) ? Can a EU private Identity provider access the photo by reading the NFC ID card and what are the rules ?

    Best regards,

    Rémy

  2. Hi Remy Fugier,

I believe REGULATION (EU) 2019/1157 is relevant to this. See Article 11 - https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/PDF/?uri=CELEX:32019R1157&from=EN

There may be others at EU or national level, but I'm afraid I don't have an overview.

    Best,

    George O'Neill
