ViSH is a collaborative social network for creating and sharing educational knowledge resources in HTML5. ViSH provides scientists, teachers and their pupils a package of activities, materials, and tools for enabling the integration of e-Infrastructures into school curricula. ViSH even allows you to organize online events to explore research labs live directly from the classroom and connect scientists."

"Germany's recent history is tainted by the events surrounding the fate of the Jewish people during the reign of the "Third Reich”. The Nazis were responsible for the murdering of millions in Germany and the rest of Europe rounding up victims for their religious beliefs, ethnic origins, political leanings or sexual orientation. In Berlin alone tens of thousands were deported to death camps.
In memory of these victims more than 5,000 "Stolpersteine” (tripping stones) have been set in the pavements in front of their former residences. The initiator of this Stolperstein campaign is the German artist Gunter Demnig. The copper Stolpersteine give details of the victims name, biography and when and where he or she met his/her fateful death.
Information concerning the location of the stones is deposited as Open Data. We used this information to create an iPhone Application to pinpoint locations on a city map. Our work is still in progress. The aim of our computing is to simplify the locating of the stones and to enable users to find details of each individual victim by linking up with Wikipedia or other digital databases. Our intention is to support the founders of the Stolpersteine Initiative to commemorate the innocent victims of the holocaust with the introduction of our app."
"The ‘EXPEKT’ project culminated in the development of the ‘Photonics Explorer’ intra-curricular educational kit designed to engage, excite and educate students about the fascination of working with light and optics – hands-on! The kit has been specifically designed to integrate into European science curriculum and equip teachers with material to enhance and complement the teaching and learning of science in the classroom. The exhibit will feature the ‘Photonics Explorer’ kit with interesting hands-on demonstrations highlighting the main aspects of photonics and how these effects are related to cutting-edge yet familiar daily technologies. Thus we hope to encourage the next generation of scientists and engineers!"
"Nowadays, we are heavily dependent on smart mobile devices as the main means of technological communication. On the other hand, when considering natural means of communication we make frequent use of gestures which aid in self-expression. The exponential technological progress that smart mobile technology brought about, lights the way to a significant extension of its applicability in our common daily tasks.
In our study we planned to integrate these two means of communication (smart mobile technology and gesture communication) through the challenging area of gesture recognition. This study also serves as a stepping stone to sign language recognition by using gestures as means to overcome communication barriers."
"Waste collection and handling are among the key aspects of systems for resource recovery. The overall success of a recycling stream is driven by appropriate public policies and conscious households. In Italy the efforts to encourage recycling behavior have met with limited success: it remains a challenge to public policy makers.
The present study examines the potential effects of nudge principles on recycling behavior. Specifically, through experimental and field work, the project will analyze how social norms may impact household choices. The next step would be to develop a more effective set of communication tools in order to stimulate household willingness to recycle. Ideally this set of tools would be adapted to address the heterogeneity of households and legislations across Europe."
"Concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) systems use optics to concentrate sunlight onto small solar cells. The significant decrease of the required solar cell area provides a pathway to lower cost, as expensive semiconductor material is replaced by inexpensive mirrors or lenses. Achieving high levels of concentration normally requires precise dual-axis tracking of the sun's diurnal and seasonal movements.
Differing from conventional CPV modules, we propose a novel approach that integrates a part of the external solar tracking functionality into the CPV module. To unleash the full potential of our proposed CPV system, a free-form (without rotational symmetry) optics design is absolutely essential. Our new concept contributes substantially to the existing CPV technology as it decouples the achievable concentration level from the external solar tracker of choice."
"Social phobia, is one of the most often occurring types of mental disorder, with reports that estimate this to affect 13.3% of the US population, and 6.7% of European population during their live (life-time prevalence). The effect of this phobia on patients includes secondary depression and substance abuse, restricted socialization and poor employment and education performance. The gold standard to treat patient with social phobia is gradual exposure in vivo, where they are gradually exposed to more anxiety provoking real-life situations until their fear dissipates. Although exposure in vivo is an effective method, there are some clear limitations, for example; (1) some specific social situations are difficult to arrange therefore the treatment becomes expensive; (2) therapists have limited controls over the exposure elements; (3) a high number of drop out as patients are not always willing to be treated in the dreaded situation they fear; and (4) limited and lack of trained therapists hence create a long waiting list for the treatment and difficulty to get access toward face-to-face therapy in rural areas.
In order to tackle the mentioned problems, we develop a system called Virtual reality Exposure therapy (VRET) specific for social anxiety disorder patient. VRET technology has been studied and proposed as an effective alternative to overcome these shortcomings of exposure in vivo, including patients’ willingness to participate. In contrary to exposure in vivo, our VRET system makes the control of exposure elements more manageable and cost effective since the patient is exposed in a controlled Virtual Environment where the parameters of anxiety evoking stimuli (i.e. the social setting environments, avatar’s eye gaze, avatar’s dialogue style and the narrative stories that included in the exposure session, etc.) can be easily changed and manipulated by the therapist based on the patient's behavior (subjective unit of discomfort, the length of the speech) and their physiological responses (heart rate, perspiration, speech emotion). Moreover, our VRET technology can be used remotely over the internet (called at home treatment), therefore able to bridging the gap of the difficulty to get access toward face-to-face therapy in rural areas, hence can save time and demanding treatment cost."
“In the yearly nineties, Mark Weiser, a chief scientist at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), introduced the concept of Ubiquitous Computing. Accordingly to Weiser, computers require too much attention from the user, drawing his focus from the tasks at hand. Instead of being the centre of attention, computers should be so natural that they would vanish into the human environment. Within this vision, computers, and others digital technologies, are integrated seamlessly into everyday objects and activities, hidden from our senses whenever not used or needed. Computers become not only truly pervasive but also effectively invisible and unobtrusive to the user. The work undertaken in this research project pursues this vision. It explores how the concepts behind printed electronics and electrochromism can be used to seamlessly merge the physical and digital worlds. Common printing techniques, such as screen printing and inkjet printing, are used in combination with conductive and electrochromic functional inks as a mean to introduce electro-optic functionalities into objects and products where it was previously unavailable, and thus create simple, embedded, computational structures and digital display devices with novel form factors (e.g. paper based displays).”
"Network Function Virtualization (NFV) has emerged as an operator proposal for offering network services with network functions implemented in software, which may be located in Data Centres, network nodes or even in virtual machines. NFV is theoretically applicable to any network function and aims at simplifying the management of heterogeneous hardware platforms. Using as a basis one of the key network functions offered by network routers, this research project presents the analysis, design, and the first proof-of-concept implementation, in a virtualized manner, of the routing function.
Considering the current co-existence of IPv4 and IPv6 and the possibilities brought by OpenFlow-enabled infrastructures, the project describes the design of the virtualized routing protocol, enabling a simple management and avoiding signaling messages overhead at the control plane level. In essence, the project represents one of the first implementations of the functional NFV concept, through the virtualization of the routing function over an OpenFlow network. The project also evaluates the applicability of the proposed NFV-powered implementation into actual production environments."

"Supply-demand balancing act in electricity grids is a very demanding task. It requires constant monitoring of the network and very fast response to system changes. Poor regulation might lead to brownouts or even blackouts of the whole country. At the same time, increasing number of renewables add another layer of complexity due to their inherent variability in power output. Luckily, recent advancement in communication and sensing technologies enable the advancement of Smart Grid. It will supply utilities and grid managers with additional set of tools for maintaining system balance and stability.
This PhD project focuses on development of a novel Demand Side Management technique using real-time pricing. It proposes to use state of the art machine learning technique - Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) - to model load response to price change. Having ANN model it is then possible to design model predictive controller to control the total consumption using pricing signal, which is sent to residential Energy Management Units. It is expected that increased number of smart appliances and intelligent Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems will contribute in reacting to the state of electricity network. The main research challenge in this novel technique is to find a way to shed the load without creating even bigger peaks of energy consumption at other times."
"Often a remote control capability of the building control system is aimed just to its administrating staff or house owner (e. g. HomeSeer, Control4, Desigo, WebCTRL, Metasys). For this reason such systems have limited use for shops, offices and other buildings where different users would like to access control of their cabinets or apartments remotely. My project goals are to develop a scalable building control system, where each user would have a remote access to the rooms he/she owns, works or lives. This would be done on a secure system running on ARM Cortex A8 1 GHz server such asBeagleBone Black and implemented using .NET managed code."
