Methodologies to Measure the Potential of Smart Grids for Green House Gas Reductions

This study analysed five EU electricity markets in order to model the impact on decarbonisation of the introduction of Smart Grids. The study also identified Smart Grid functionalities which are indispensable for the reaping of energy and GHG benefits. The study also made recommendations for future EU policies in the field, and pointed out areas that require further research efforts.

The study was commissioned by the European Commission and conducted by VaasaETT Öppet Bolag, Helsinki, Finland; Pöyry Energy Ltd., Oxford, UK, and the University of Oxford's Environmental Change Institute (ECI). It was finalized in July 2012.
