Alexander von Gabain obtained his PhD in Genetics at the University of Heidelberg and was post-doctoral fellow at Stanford University. He was Professor at the University of UmeƄ and advisor to biotech companies. He was Chair of Microbiology of the University of Vienna. In 1998 he founded Intercell AG and led the company as CEO until it was successfully floated on the Vienna Stock Exchange in 2005. Until 2009 he was member of the Executive Management Board and CSO of the company. Today he is member of the Company Supervisory Board.

He is Professor of Microbiology at Max Perutz Laboratories of the University of Vienna, and foreign adjunct professor at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm. In 2008 he was appointed to the Governing Board of the EIT of which he has been the chairman since 2011. His achievements have been acknowledged by prestigious industrial awards, academic prizes, and honourable memberships.
