Representation in Cyprus

Elderly citizens

The Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus implements an Action to inform and raise awareness of Elderly citizens on European issues.

The Action is an opportunity to support a broader effort to raise awareness and sensitization of Elderly citizens (60-65+, 80-85+) on EU issues, with main purpose to gain greater public awareness of the benefits of EU legislation and the implementation of its diverse policies.

The Action was designed to include a comprehensive network of interventions that will enable elderly people to learn about the active role of the European Union at national or European level and the benefits that Cypriot citizens enjoy as a result of its individual actions.

The main objective of the Action focuses initially on activating Elderly citizens and then on their contribution in understanding and promoting the European Idea. Secondly, among other things, the Action aims to inform and raise awareness of the Elderly Citizens through specialized actions, the promotion of EU policies at national level as well as the networking and promotion of synergies between the policy makers involved in the preparation of the National Action Plan for the elderly.

Through this Action, the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus aspires to create a framework for close cooperation between the stakeholders and other actors in Cyprus dealing with Elderly Citizens. In addition, an exchange of information and policies, as well as good practices, will be achieved, which will improve the quality and cooperation among organizations active in the above fields.

In this context, a series of actions such as the preparation and distribution of a brochure, meetings of actors dealing with the issues of the Elderly Citizen, publication of articles on the printed and electronic press, television and radio broadcasting, etc. were organized.

At the same time, a series of visits to various Provinces of Cyprus were planned, in which reference is made to all the projects co-financed by the European Union. A program of four (4) visits was completed in 2018 involving more than two hundred (200) Elderly citizens, who were informed on the spot, both on the overall support that Cyprus receives from its accession to the European Union and of specific projects implemented with European co-financing. Particularly, visits to various points of the thematic route of Larnaka-Nicosia’s mountainous area, of the Cyprus Tourism Organization, in Kalavasos - where information on the community redevelopment projects was carried out -, in Limassol and in the Multifunctional Seaside Park of the city, as well as in Kalopanayiotis - where information was received about the village's redevelopment projects. Representatives from the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus and the European Parliament Liaison Office in Cyprus also participate in these visits.

The main goal of these visits, apart from providing information on the contribution and the role of the European Union in Cyprus, is the interface of all stakeholders, in order to provide solutions and ways to tackle the problems faced by Elderly citizens.

In addition to the discussion and open dialogue with representatives of the EU institutions, an intergenerational dialogue is planned during the visits to further the development of the two generations' relations with emphasis on issues concerning the future of young people in the EU.

For the remaining period and up to the completion of the Action, promotional and publicity actions will be intensified as well as tours of co-funded projects, while a conference will be organized at the Presidential Palace in view of the forthcoming European Elections.

In conclusion, this Action, through these meetings, visits and various information actions, is expected to significantly enhance the dissemination and consolidation of European principles and values, as well as the wider range of Union policies. Also, it will further highlight the role of the EU at national level and will provide responsible information on all its acts.
