On 15/08/2014 the Biblioteca Bardensis in Barth, Northern Germany, was awarded the 2014 EU Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards.

First mentioned in 1398, the library, home to over 4,000 priceless literary works, was painstakingly cleaned and restored by the Association of Friends of St. Mary's Library Church, with the sponsorship of the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation, preserving the works for future generations, and keeping them available for the public.

Over 400 cultural professionals, as well as supporters, volunteers, and government representatives attended the Local Award Ceremony, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Richard K├╝hnel, Representative of the European Commission in Germany, and Claus-Peter Echter, Council Member of Europa Nostra, all of whom praised the restoration, as well as the role and work of the Association.
