7-8 December in Milan

The European Culture Forum is a biennial flagship event organised by the European Commission to raise the profile of European cultural cooperation, to bring together cultural sectors' key players and to debate on EU culture policy and initiatives. Its 2017 edition will also mark the official launch of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, the thematic EU year devoted to our common cultural assets and all their aspects.  

The event, for the first time outside of Brussels, will take place at Superstudio in the booming creative neighbourhood of Tortona in Milan. This extraordinary event venue, once a bicycle factory and then a place for fashion publishing and art created by a renowned Italian art director Flavio Lucchini in the 1980s, will provide an inspiring and thought-provoking decorum for lively discussions, unexpected meetings and fruitful exchanges.

Can culture help to tackle European and global challenges? Does cultural heritage matter to Europeans? How can culture in cities and regions help to shape more cohesive and inclusive societies? Come to Milan to discuss, listen, think and get inspired.

European Culture Forum Game Jam

The Game Jam was organised in parallel to the Forum,  in cooperation with the Video Game Museum of Rome (VIGAMUS) and the European Federation of Game Archives, Museums and Preservation Projects (EFGAMP). Eight teams of game developers and students from Italy, United Kingdom, Finland, France, Poland and Switzerland participated.

On the basis of the announced theme, 'Our heritage: where the past meets the future', the teams created short games from scratch, crafting all their aspects. The game demos were then evaluated by the Jury and the winners were presented at the closing of the European Culture Forum 2017. The winning games and teams were:

  • First place: 'Design David' by Miikka Harjuntausta and Krista Erkkilä, with music from Malik Mah Likhou Yahi
  • Second place: 'Hashtag History' by Alex Roberts, Callum Mulligan and Maxime Bodin, with music from Malik Mah Likhou Yahi
  • Third place: 'The Last Song on Earth' by Guglielmo De Gregori, Federico Dell'Aquila and Federico Pineli

European Culture Forum Next Door at BASE Milano

A parallel programme, open for all participants with forum bages,  will be offered at BASE Milano, in the immediate vicinity of Superstudio, by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Cultural Activities and Tourism, the Milan City Council and Cariplo Foundation.
Forum participans are invited to stop by on the evening of December 7th to close the first day of the European Culture Forum 2017 with a poster session, networking opportunities and entertainment.

Intangible Cultural Heritage under Pressure – an evening talk

On December 7th, from 19.00, join the  European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) and the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (Ifa) for a talk on local experiences and international developments in protecting intangible cultural heritage, followed by a reception. The event takes place at My Own Gallery, Superstudio. Participants with Forum badges are welcome. Limited seating. Please come early to secure your place.

Born in Varese, Italy, on 15 March 1955. Married with three children. Resident in Varese. Graduated in law.

He was elected Member of the Italian Parliament the first time in 1992. He became Chairman of the Lega Nord Chamber of Deputies’ Parliamentary Group in 1993. The following year he joined the first Berlusconi administration as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior.

In 2001, after once more being returned to Parliament, he served as Minister of Labour and Social Policy (Welfare) under the Second and Third Berlusconi Administrations.

In 2008, he was re-elected to the Chamber with the Lega Nord Padania. Under the fourth Berlusconi administration he served as Minister for Internal Affairs.

Polling 43% of votes cast, he was elected President of the Lombardy region in elections held on 25-26 February 2013.

In his free time, he plays Hammond organ in Soul group Distretto 51.

Giuseppe Sala

Giuseppe Sala was born in Milan in 1958.

He has held various positions of responsibility in both the private and public sector, gaining important professional managerial experience.

In the private sector, he took leading roles in major companies, such as Pirelli and Telecom Italia.

From January 2009 until June 2010, he served in the public sector as City Manager of the Municipality of Milan.

He was then appointed CEO of the company managing the Universal Exposition, Expo Milano 2015.

In 2013, he was appointed Commissioner of the Government for the Expo.

His love for Milan and his willingness to make it a fairer, more international and more attractive place led him to commit himself to politics. He was elected Mayor of Milan in June 2016.

Giuseppe Sala holds a Degree in Economics and Business Administration from Bocconi University. He is the author of the book Milano sull’acqua. Ieri, oggi, domani [Milan on the Water. Past, Present, Future] (2014).

Tibor Navracsics

Opening session

Tibor Navracsics took up office as European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport on 1 November 2014.

Before becoming Commissioner, he held ministerial posts in successive Hungarian governments: as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Administration and Justice from 2010 to 2014, then as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade from June to September 2014.

Tibor Navracsics was a member of the Hungarian Parliament from 2006 until he became European Commissioner. He led the Fidesz Group between 2006 and 2010.

He holds a law degree and a doctoral degree in political science. In the 1990s, Tibor Navracsics started to teach at the University of Economics in Budapest. From 1997 until taking up office as European Commissioner, he taught at the Eötvös Loránd University’s Faculty of Law and Political Sciences in Budapest, where he became an associate professor in 2001.

Dario Franceschini (Ferrara, 19 October 1958) is an Italian lawyer, writer, and politician, and Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism since 22 February 2014.

From 22 December 1999 to 11 June 2001 he was Undersecretary of State in the D'Alema II Cabinet and then in the Amato II Cabinet, whereas from 28 April 2013 to 22 February 2014 he was Minister for Relations with Parliament and the coordination of government activity in the government of Prime Minister Enrico Letta.

Secretary of the Democratic Party from 21 February to 25 October 2009 and the first Chairman of the Olive Tree group in the Chamber from 2006 to 2008, he then was the Chairman of the Parliamentary Group of the Democratic Party from 17 November to 19 March 2013.

Indrek Saar
Minister of Culture of the Republic of Estonia

Opening session

Indrek Saar took up office as Estonian Minister of Culture on 9 April 2015.

As Minister, he is in charge of developing and implementing national policy in the areas of fine arts, sport, heritage conservation, media and integration.

Prior to becoming a Minister, he was a member of the Estonian Parliament from 2007 onwards until his assuming office as the Minister of Culture in 2015.

He has considerable experience in directing cultural organisations having worked as the director of several Estonian theatres since 1996 until 2007. From 2002 to 2007, he acted as the Deputy Chairman of City Council of Rakvere - the seventh largest city of Estonia.

Since 2015, Indrek Saar is Deputy Chairman of the Estonian Social Democratic Party.

Indrek Saar holds a MA degree in Theatre Studies and is a graduate of the Drama School of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (1996).

Petra Kammerevert is a Member of the European Parliament since 2009, representing the cities of Krefeld, Düsseldorf, Krefeld, Mönchengladbach, Remscheid, Solingen, Wuppertal and the administrative districts Mettmann and Neuss. She is a member of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament (S&D).

Petra Kammerevert currently chairs the Committee on Culture and Education (apart from culture and education, the committee is responsible for information society, media, youth and sports policy). She is also a member of the Delegation to the EU-Montenegro Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee and a substitute member of the Delegation to the EU-Albania. Her main political activities include media, culture, youth politics and sports.

Born in Brescia, Italy, on May 28, 1978.

She graduated in Law, with a comparative thesis on the role of European political parties in the national states crisis.

She had a number of working experiences in the legislative field at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Chamber of Deputies, mainly dealing with constitutional reforms and comparative public law. She has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Social Affairs (IAS).

She is author of poetic and narrative texts and has been awarded in many literary competitions nationwide.

In March 2013, she was appointed Lombardy Regional Minister for Culture, Identity and Autonomy.

Born in Milano in 1970, he graduated in Composition in 1995.

His music has been performed by Luciano Berio, James MacMillan, David Alan Miller, Dimitri Ashkenazy, John Axelrod, Enrique Mazzola, Carlo Boccadoro, RAI National Symphony Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, California EAR Unit, Almeida Opera in various festivals, theatres and concert halls including the South Bank Centre (London), Internationale MusikFestwochen (Luzern), Bang On A Can Marathon (New York), Konzerthaus (Berlin), Festival de Radio France et Montpellier, Teatro alla Scala, Biennale (Venezia).

The City of Copenhagen, European Capital of Culture in 1996, invites him to participate in the collective composition of European Requiem, written by young poets and composers from different areas and cultures of Europe.

In 1997, in collaboration with Carlo Boccadoro and Angelo Miotto, he founds the group for contemporary music Sentieri selvaggi.

In 2001 he writes Orfeo a fumetti, a chamber opera based on the comic book “Poema a fumetti” by Dino Buzzati. The opera is premiered in Milano and then performed in Torino, Mantova and Roma.

In 2002 his opera Non guardate al domani, based on a libretto by Angelo Miotto about the kidnapping and the murder of Aldo Moro, is selected for the workshop phase of “the Genesis Prize for Opera”, and the first part is performed in London by Almeida Opera. After a long work in progress the opera is premiered in 2008 (Milano).

In 2009 the international Festival MiTo Settembre Musica produces his work Io Hitler, on a text by the Italian writer Giuseppe Genna. The staging, directed by Francesco Frongia and conducted by Carlo Boccadoro, takes place at Teatro Franco Parenti in Milano.

His works have been recorded for different labels such as Cantaloupe, RaiTrade, BMG Ricordi, EMI Classics, Sensible Records, Stradivarius and Thymallus; his music is published by Rai Trade Edizioni MusicaliRicordiSuvini Zerboni and Sonzogno.
From December 2011 to March 2013 he was appointed as Chairman of the Board of Fondazione Milano.  In March 2013, he was appointed Deputy Mayor for Culture of Comune di Milano.

Mircea Diaconu

Actor, writer and politician, Mircea DIACONU is one of the best-known Romanian personalities of our times. His artistic career includes more than a hundred film and theatre performances, among which Dan Pița's “Nunta de piatră” (1972), Lucian Pintilie’s “De ce trag clopotele, Mitică?” (1981), Nae Caranfil’s “Asfalt Tango” (1996) and “Filantropica” (2002). He performed on the stages of “Bulandra” and “Nottara” theatres in masterpieces such as Marin Sorescu's “Răceala” (directed by Dan Micu) and Mihai Ispirescu's “Într-o dimineață”. He also managed the “Nottara” theatre between 2004 – 2011.

In terms of public involvement, Mircea DIACONU holds a considerable record of civic and political engagement: he played an active part in the 1989 Romanian Revolution; he was one of the founding members of the organization “Alianța Civica”; between 2008-2012 he served on the “Culture Committee” as Senator for Argeș County on the lists of the National Liberal Party and in 2012 he held the office of Culture Minister in the Victor Ponta cabinet.

In 2014 DIACONU ran as independent and was elected as Member of the European Parliament. He is currently Vice-chair of the EP’s Culture and Education Committee and an independent member of the ALDE Group. In 2016, Mircea Diaconu was designated EP's Rapporteur for the European Year for Cultural Heritage 2018.

Antonio Tajani

The European Year of Cultural Heritage starts now!

Born in Rome on 4 August 1953, Antonio Tajani is the son of an Italian army officer and a Latin and Greek professor. He lived in France for five years, where he and his family accompanied his father to NATO command. He holds a degree in law from La Sapienza University in Rome.

Mr Tajani completed his military service as an officer in the Italian Air Force. After attending a specialised air defence course at Borgo Piave di Latina, he joined the NATO Air Defence Ground Environment (NADGE).

Mr Tajani was a professional journalist for more than twenty years. He started out as a presenter of news programmes on Rai Radio 1, the Italian state broadcaster, and was a special correspondent in Lebanon, the Soviet Union and Somalia.  He was then asked by Indro Montanelli, the most recognised and revered Italian journalist of the twentieth century, to work for the newspaper, "Il Giornale".

A co-founder of Forza Italia, in 1994 he was elected to the European Parliament for the first time, the genesis of what have turned into more than two decades of profound engagement with the European Union and its citizens.

He was appointed European Commissioner for Transport in 2008. In 2010, he became European Commissioner for Industry and Entrepreneurship.

He was re-elected to the European Parliament and as one of its vice-presidents in 2014.

Campaigning on a platform that promised to have the presidency focus on actively supporting the work of Members while bringing the institution closer to EU citizens, Mr Tajani was elected President of the European Parliament on 17 January 2017.

Internationally recognised for her work with some of the world’s leading opera houses and orchestras, Hannah has led projects in eighteen different countries, carving a path as a composer, presenter and music director. At the heart of her work always is intense collaboration and musical input from young people. She has composed operas in 12 different languages, presented and devised BBC Proms and received commissions from the London Symphony Orchestra, Glyndebourne, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra and Royal Opera House. The Freedom Game opera (2015) received its premiere at the Royal Albert Hall for 1200 performers and Beautiful World (2016) won the Education Middle East Performing Arts Award at the National Theatre, Abu Dhabi. Sought as a guest artist, she has collaborated with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Opéra de Dijon, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Luxembourg Philharmonie, LʼOrchéstre de Paris, Muziekcentrum Van De Omroep, and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. She has directed opera residencies in Serbia, France and Sweden and been engaged as a consultant in creative educational practice and audience engagement by the Royal Danish Opera, Het Muziek Theater, Fundacja Nowa Orkiestra Kameralna, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, De Nederlandse Bach Vereniging and Songbound, India. Current projects include Towards Another World, a promenade opera about exile for the English National Opera.

Norman Jardine
Head of Internal Communication at the European Commission

Norman Jardine is currently Head of Internal Communication at the European Commission in Brussels. In this role and in his previous role as Head of Learning and Development, he has designed and facilitated hundreds of Away Days and large group events with staff at all levels of the  organisation. He was previously Head of Learning and Development in the Commission, and worked for a number of years as a management trainer in the UK Office for National Statistics. A former punk rocker, in his spare time he runs his own record label.

Johannes Ebert has been Secretary General of the Goethe-Institut since 2012. He read Islamic Studies and Political Science in Freiburg and Damaskus and thereafter worked as a journalist. After periods as an instructor at the Goethe-Institut in Prien, as a language course consultant at the Goethe-Institut in Riga and as deputy head of the Public Relations division in the Munich head office, he was director of the Goethe-Institut Kiev from 1997 to 2002. From 2002 to 2007 he was director of the Goethe-Institut in Cairo and regional director for North Africa and the Middle East. Subsequently, he served as director of the Goethe-Institut in Moscow and regional director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia from 2007 to 2012.

Katherine Watson moved from Canada to join the European Cultural Foundation in 2006 and has been Director since 2010. Prior to working with  ECF, Katherine's international experience, from both sides of the Atlantic, has combined interdisciplinary production with advocacy, research, policy and programme development for nonprofit arts and culture organisations and all levels of government. She has particular interest in investigating  the impact of the digital shift on our lives, in fostering the intersection of art and culture with other fields of endeavour and in enabling voices from all  corners of civil society.

Katherine is the Cultural Leader in Residence for a Research Masters Programme in Cultural Leadership at Groningen University. She is currently Vice Chair of the European Foundation Centre, a membership organisation for institutional philanthropy that was instigated by ECF and in which ECF plays an active part.

The European Cultural Foundation (ECF) was founded in Geneva in 1954. Based in Amsterdam since 1960, ECF is a grant-making and impact driven incubator that accelerates, catalyses, connects and communicates civil society initiatives through arts and culture that rethink and build Europe as an open, inclusive and democratic space.

Challenges (for Culture) in Europe: 2007,2017,2027

For the past twenty years, she has been working in the field of cultural heritage at the Transylvania Trust, and in the last few years, she had the opportunity to work at the highest national and international level. Her professional experience includes restoration and revitalisation of the built environment, such as Bánffy castle, Bontida, and the village of Rimetea (Torockó), both being awarded with the EU/Europa Nostra prize for Cultural Heritage, teaching the management of built environment at the Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj/Kolozsvár, also working as jury member of Europa Nostra and European Heritage Label. In 2014, Csilla Hegedüs was appointed as State Secretary responsible for cultural heritage and, for a short while, the Minister of Culture and Vice Prime Minister of Romania. She has worked and lived mainly in Cluj (Kolozsvár), Transylvania, Romania.

She strongly believes that cultural heritage is the strongest asset on which we can build the sustainable, inclusive future of all in the European Union.

Silvia Costa is currently S&D Group Coordinator Committee on Culture and education of the European Parliament.

She was Chair of the Committee on Culture and education of the European Parliament (2014-2016) and rapporteur for the European Parliament of the Creative Europe Programme 2014-2020.

She was Lazio regional councillor responsible for education, educational rights and training (2005-2009); member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies for three parliamentary terms; member of the Committee on internal affairs, the Committee on culture, science and education and the Committee on general guidance and monitoring of radio and television services (1985-1993).

State secretary at the Ministry for universities, scientific research and technology (1993-1994).

She was chair of the European advisory committee on equal opportunities during the 1996 Italian Presidency of the EU and head of the EU delegation to the annual session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (1996).

Cultural heritage: the beating heart of Europe?

Omilanowska studied history of art at Warsaw University and history of architecture in Berlin at the Technical University. She works as a professor at the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, and since 2006 she is professor of  history of art at Gdansk University.

From 2012 to 2014 she was deputy minister of Culture and National Heritage, and from 2014 to 2105, minister of Culture and National Heritage of the Polish Republic.

She specializes in 19th and 20th century architecture, publishing works on such issues as engineering architecture, city planning, commercial architecture, educating architects in the 19th century, as well as research of national style and national and regional identity in the architecture of Central-European countries.

She was a fellow of many scientific institutions in Europe like British Academy, Russian Academy of Science, Geisteswissenschafliches Zentrum Geschichte und Kultur Ostmitteleuropas in Leipzig Herder Institute in Marburg and Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin. She has published 9 books on history of art and many articles.

She is active in the field of monument preservation, working as an expert, member of consultancy bodies serving the Conservator’s Office, while remaining committed to the activity of social entities dealing with the preservation of monuments.

She is a member of many scientific organizations and boards, among others the Polish ICOMOS Committee, board of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg, board of the European Center of Solidarność in Gdańsk and polish member of CIHA (Comité International d’histoire de l’art).  She is a member of the Orders:  Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (Knight Grand Cross), Order of Orange-Nassau (Knight Grand Cross), Order of the Lion of Finland (Commander Grand Cross) and Ordre des Arts et des Letters of France (Commandeur).

Cultural heritage: the beating heart of Europe?

She obtained a degree in International Law in Belgrade (former Yugoslavia) and in European Law and Politics in Nancy (France). She worked for European institutions in Brussels and then for the European Commission Delegation in Belgrade. She was one of the founders and the first Secretary-General of the European Movement in Yugoslavia.

In 1992, she joined the staff of Europa Nostra and in 2000, she was appointed as Secretary General.

She has contributed to many European and international committees and networks, most recently to the “European Heritage Alliance 3.3.” and the “New Narrative for Europe”. She cooperates with the EU institutions, the Council of Europe and UNESCO on heritage matters.

She has written many articles on Europe and cultural heritage. She was a co-editor of the book "Heritage and the Building of Europe" and a contributor to the books "50/20 Sketches and essays", "Retour Brussel, Erfgoed en Europa" and “The Mind and Body of Europe: A New Narrative".

Pier Luigi Sacco is Professor of Cultural Economics, IULM University Milan; Senior Researcher, metaLAB (at) Harvard, and visiting scholar at Harvard University. He is the Special Adviser of the European Commissioner for Education and Culture, member of the Europeana Research Advisory Board, of the Economics of Culture Committee of the Italian Ministry of Culture, of the Advisory Council for Research & Innovation of the Czech Republic, and of the Advisory Council of Creative Georgia. Since January 2018, he will be Director of IRVAPP, the Foundation for Public Policy Evaluation of Bruno Kessler Foundation, Trento, Italy. He has published about 200 papers in international peer-reviewed journals and edited books with major international publishers, and is in the editorial board of several journals including Quality & Quantity, Creative Industry Journal, International Journal of Cultural and Creative Industries, Mind and Society, Economia della Cultura.  He works and consults internationally in the fields of culture-led local development and is often invited as keynote speaker in major cultural policy conferences worldwide.

Alexandra SZALAY-BOBROVNICZKY took up office as Deputy Mayor of Budapest for Human Affairs on 4 November 2014. She is responsible for performing duties related to culture, education, social policy, youth policy, sports, environmental protection, tourism and city image. In this broad area, it falls within her competence to supervise the activities of theatres, museums, sports centres, retirement homes and various other institutions. She pays particular attention to duties related to city image with the aim of making Budapest a popular and more visible city for its residents and its visitors alike. Prior to this, she was a Member of the General Assembly of Budapest (FIDESZ-KDNP alliance).

Dr Beatriz Garcia is the Director of the Institute of Cultural Capital and senior Research Fellow in Communication Studies at the University of Liverpool. She is also a member of the European Capital of Culture Selection Committee at the European Commission, and the Culture & Olympic Heritage Commission at the International Olympic Committee.

Dr Garcia has been at the forefront of research on the rhetoric and impact of culture-led city regeneration interventions since 1999. Major projects include a review of all available evidence on the first three decades of the European Capital of Culture programme (ECoC); the pioneering Impacts 08 programme, a longitudinal 10-year study on the socio-economic and cultural impacts of Liverpool as 2008 ECoC; the first nation-wide legacy assessment of a Cultural Olympiad, focusing on the London 2012 Olympic Games; and the first comprehensive study of the 20-year legacy of hosting an ECoC, focusing on Glasgow post-1990. To conduct this research, Beatriz has been funded by national and international bodies such as the European Parliament, European Commission, International Olympic Committee, British Council, British Academy and Research Councils UK.

Shain Shapiro, PhD is the Founder and CEO of Sound Diplomacy.  Sound Diplomacy is the leading global advisor on growing music and night time economies in cities and places.  He is also the co-founder of Music Cities Convention, the world’s largest event bringing together the music industry with city planners, developers, policy makers and executives.  Through Sound Diplomacy, he has consulted for over 10 developers and 20 cities, including developing the Cuban official music strategy for the United Nations and working on developing 6 venues across the UK.  He consults at length with the Greater London Authority, worked on the development of London’s Night Czar and across the Mayor of London’s music policy.   He has delivered a TEDx talk on the value of music to cities and spoken at the European Parliament, MIDEM, MIPIM, SXSW and in over 40 countries, from Uganda to Chile, Estonia to Canada.  Sound Diplomacy currently works in over 20 countries and counts the Mayor of London, United Nations, Canadian Government and German Department of International Trade as clients.  Shain holds a PhD from the University of London and was one of the top 10 Creative Entrepreneurs in Britain in the British Council's h100 list.

Michael Walling is Artistic Director of Border Crossings ( - an intercultural theatre company, which creates new productions in collaboration with artists from a broad range of cultural backgrounds.  Recent projects have included co-productions with companies from the Palestinian Territories, China, India, Sweden, France and Ghana.  Border Crossings also co-produces the biennial ORIGINS Festival, which brings the world’s indigenous cultures to London: including the first UK performances by Mexico’s Voladores de Papantla, and bringing indigenous Australian music and dance into the heart of the British Museum! 

Border Crossings also works in educational and community settings, as well as engaging with the development of cultural policy.  Michael was an active member of the Platform for Intercultural Europe, co-hosting the 2011 Practice Exchange, and co-wrote the 2016 Voices of Culture report on arts and refugees. 

He is also a freelance director of theatre and opera, a frequent contributor to academic journals on theatre and interculturalism, and Visiting Professor of Intercultural and Multicultural Performance at Rose Bruford College: London’s International Drama School.

The City of Leeuwarden in the North of the Netherlands is the European Capital of Culture in 2018.  Leeuwarden – Fryslân was elected out of five Dutch cities to be the capital, because it presented a program in which art is seen as a catalyst for change. The programme is developed in a bottom-up process, a working method that is crucial for the organisation.

Oeds Westerhof led the organisation during the competition. After winning the bid, he became member of the board of directors.  His main responsibility is the legacy of the capital of culture. His daily question is: "how can we use the events and the networks that are developed to secure the renewal of the city and the region?". Before he started working for the capital of culture, Oeds Westerhof was working as a managing-director in museums, theatres, libraries, festivals, art schools and cinema centres. He also worked as a consultant on culture policy for cities, regions and the national government in the Netherlands.

Vassilis Charalampidis was born in Athens in 1975. He is a founding member and the artistic director of BIOS, a cultural centre for art and new media, and of Romantso, the first Greek Creative Industries Incubator. He worked as an artistic director for many years in advertisement companies and communication services. In 1999, he established his own record label to release his own music and music of young Greek producers. In 2001 he started the BIOS project, both as a venue and as the first international new media festival in Greece and he gets exceptional critics from the Greek and international press.  Since then, he has been curating numerous events and performances concerning urban culture, new media and various expressions of contemporary artistic creativity, and he has directed shows that explore the limits and boundaries between live performance and installation.

Mieke Renders is the Managing Director of Trans Europe Halles. Mieke was born in Belgium in 1975 and is passionate about music, culture and languages, having lived in several countries. She is a strong believer in the independence of cultural operators, and their capacity to self-organise in networks in order to achieve greater impact. Before she moved to Sweden, she was the general manager of the Flemish Cultural Center ‘De Brakke Grond’ in Amsterdam and worked as cultural attaché for Flanders House in New York. She has studied cultural & physical anthropology, musicology and arts management, which led her to start off in the museum and cultural heritage field, where she both worked as a curator and as a project manager. Many years later, she shifted more into the living arts and made connections between heritage and performing and visual arts. Networking is a passion, which she can now develop for Trans Europe Halles.

Dr. Kai Huotari (born 1972) has 17 years of management experience in cultural organisations, academia and technology. Since November 2015, Huotari has worked as Managing Director at Kiinteistö Oy Kaapelitalo, the largest cultural centre in Finland. Previously, Huotari held managerial positions at EIT Digital Helsinki, at Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT, and at DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival. In 2010-2012, Huotari worked as visiting scholar at UC Berkeley School of Information. Huotari has an MA degree in filmmaking, a MSc degree in computer science and a doctoral degree in economics and business administration. Damien Helly is Head of cultural skills, EU for the British Council (Arts, Europe). He leads on two EU-funded multi-year projects namely European Creative Hubs Network and Live Skills.

Damien has 20 years of management, innovation, policy influence and research in international and European affairs (ECDPM, EUISS, Crisis Group, Saferworld). He was one of the 4 independent experts of the EU Preparatory action on culture in external relations.

He is also visiting professor at the International Relations and Diplomacy Department of the College of Europe in Bruges where he teaches a Masters level course on Culture, States and societies: national factors in EU external action.

Julie Hervé is a senior policy advisor at EUROCITES, the European network of large cities. She manages the activities of the EUROCITES Culture Forum, gathering representatives from more than 130 European cities, and of specialised working groups. She develops policy positions and publications on various aspects of culture in cities and represents the interest of member cities towards the European institutions. She managed Culture for Cities and Regions (2015-2017), an initiative funded by Creative Europe aimed to help cities and regions share knowledge on how to make smart investments in culture.

Julie holds a Master Engineer degree (‘ingénieur maître’) in cultural heritage and a Master degree in European Relations.

Arthur Le Gall is a senior consultant and researcher at KEA ( specialised in policies for the sport, audiovisual, cultural and creative sectors. He designs methodologies to assess the contribution the cultural and audiovisual sectors to the wider society and economy, and engineers support programmes and policies for the cultural and creative sectors. Arthur also delivers strategic advice to local authorities on the role of culture and creativity for local development and to nurture arts, culture and creativity across territories.

He is the author or co-author of several research pieces on culture and creativity in Europe, including ‘Mapping the creative value chains: A study on the economy of culture in the digital age’ (DG EAC, 2017), a ‘Study on the promotion of European works in Audiovisual Media Services (DG CONNECT, 2017) or the longitudinal evaluation of Mons European Capital of Culture 2015 (Mons 2015 Foundation, 2012-2016).

Arthur is now managing some key EU-funded projects, one looking into culture investment and strategic initiatives in 150 cities and regions across Europe (“Culture for cities and regions”, 2014-2017), as well as another on developing an international platform for young creative entrepreneurs (“Creative Tracks”, 2015-2017).

David Hill is the Founding Director of ArtReach, a UK cultural development agency that acts as both a Creative Producer and Strategic Arts Consultancy. David founded ArtReach in 1996 with a mission “to make great art possible and accessible, connecting art with grass roots and diverse communities to forge creative engagement” ArtReach annually delivers two major festival programmes – Night of Festivals (celebrating freedom and democracy through artistic innovation) and Journeys Festival International (with European Festivals Association status), the latter celebrating the work of refugee and asylum seeker artists. ArtReach has delivered three collaborative Creative Europe projects as Lead Partner and is also instrumental, as lead consultant, in developing a range of new venues for cultural activity. Prior to establishing ArtReach, David was a theatre director and practitioner, having been Associate Director at Cheltenham Everyman and Artistic Director of Theatre Station Blyth in Northumberland. His particular theatre expertise has been developing and directing new writing, and delivering large scale community and youth engagement projects. David also spent five years as Marketing Director of the 2,000 seat Birmingham Hippodrome, a major UK touring venue presenting national and international companies. He is a graduate in Drama and English from Hull University.

Anusha Caroline Andersson is the coordinator of culture through development in the municipality of Botkyrka in Stockholm County. She is the founder and director of the organization Historieberättarna (Storytellers). She studied at the university of Stockholm, The Royal institute of Art and Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts. For 12 years, Anusha has been working for and with children and youth in different projects in the cultural sector, for example at the Culture house in Stockholm and The Swedish Radio Theater. Historieberättarna is part of the project Storytelling Without Borders that received a grant through Creative Europe.

For more than forty years, Jordi Savall, one of the most versatile musical personalities of his generation, has rescued musical gems from the obscurity of neglect and oblivion and given them back for all to enjoy. A tireless researcher into early music, he interprets and performs the repertory both as a violist and a conductor. His activities as a concert performer, teacher, researcher and creator of new musical and cultural projects have made him a leading figure in the reappraisal of historical music. He founded the ensembles Hespèrion XXI (1974), La Capella Reial de Catalunya (1987) and Le Concert des Nations (1989). In 2008 Jordi Savall was appointed European Union Ambassador for intercultural dialogue and was named “Artist for Peace” under the UNESCO “Good Will Ambassadors” programme. His prolific musical career has brought him the highest national and international distinctions, including honorary doctorates, the order of Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur (France) and the prestigious Léonie Sonning Prize.

European Year of Cultural Heritage

Uwe Koch was born on the 24th of September 1958 in Berlin. He is a graduate in sociology from the Humboldt University Berlin. Before his appointment of 1 June 2015 as head of the German National Heritage Board he held different senior positions in the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture of the state of Brandenburg since 1991. From 2002 he directed the Department of historic monuments, the UNESCO-World Heritage sites of the palaces and gardens of Berlin and Potsdam, heritage foundations, memory culture and museums in the state of Brandenburg.

Uwe Koch has more than 25 years of experience in government administration for cultural heritage and heritage management.

He was the coordinator to prepare the initiative for a European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 and now he is the national coordinator for the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 in Germany.

He has been managing some large exhibition projects (1998 Onder den oranje boom, 2014 Preußen-Sachsen-Szenen einer Nachbarschaft).

In his leisure time, he is engaging in regional history topics, cultural heritage and educational projects in the Upper Lusatia/Saxony. There he is the head of the Dr.-Gregorius-Mättig-Stiftung Bautzen. He lives in Potsdam.

He is a cofounder and President of Fondazione Fitzcarraldo, an independent operative foundation, based in Turin, Italy, active transnationally in research, consulting, training for arts management and cultural policies and economics.

Films of the past for the future of film

Léna Rouxel works at Institut français (Paris), as general coordinator of CinEd programme – European Cinema Education for Youth- led by IF and co-funded by Creative Europe / MEDIA.

Graduated from La Fémis (French National Film Academy), she has been working as a director of photography during 12 years, and co-directed « My Palestine » a documentary selected by many international festivals and broadcasted on Arte channel.

Parallel to these activities, she has been working for several years as a trainer in film academies and as film educator in high schools.

Also graduated from the Institute of European Studies at University Paris VIII (European Cultural Policies and Management), she wrote two studies: one on the artistic documentaries on VOD platforms and one other on film education European policy challenges. She has co-founded the festival "Meetings of Young European Cinema" in Sofia, Bulgaria, where she has conceived and implemented a one-week film education workshop, that has become one of the festival’s highlights.

Head of Children & Youth Department, Danish Film Institute. Head of Secretariat, Danish Media Council for Children and Young People. General Manager of Awareness Centre Denmark (EU Connecting Europe Facility Programme).

The Danish Film Institute, Children & Youth department is responsible for film promotion and film education for children and young people. Based on these key words: "experience, understand and create", its strategies and activities are focused on all aspects of film education and the potential of film.  Since 2015, the secretariat for the Danish Media Council for Children and Young People has been an integral part of the department. The Media Council is appointed by the Danish Minster for Culture. Besides film classification, the unit is responsible for the promotion of Media Literacy, covering all aspects of children and young people’s critical understanding of the digital development and thereby strengthening their active participation and awareness in the digital society.

Previously, Claus held the position of Senior Advisor at the Danish Ministry for Culture and at Local Government Denmark. Claus holds a Master's Degree in Political Science.

Films of the past for the future of film

Silvia Pareti graduated in cinema history and criticism at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan.

From 1994 to 2006 she worked as editor-in-chief at Editrice Il Castoro srl, a publishing house focused on young people and children’s literature. She has translated, from French and English, several children's books and the Serge Daney’s essays “Pérsévérance” and “L’exercice a été profitable, monsieur”. Moreover she co-edited  the volume “Il Castoro 10/20”. From 2002 to 2006 she was appointed Chairman of the Board for the publishing house.

In 2006 she joined Fondazione Cineteca Italiana where she is appointed as project manager, being responsible for the movie theatre Area Metropolis 2.0, Artistic Director for “Piccolo Grande Cinema” a festival for children and young people taking place every year in Milan and responsible for Cineteca Italiana Educational Department.

Artistic performance

The Kimia Ghorbani's folk quintet performs a repertoire of original songs of Persian artists.

The songs are inspired by the tradition of classical and contemporary Iranian poetry.

The music, characterized by the fusion of oriental elements, folk, jazz and the Mediterranean influences, are original, vivacious and colourful, composed by the author in collaboration with the other musicians. Members of the quintet are:

  • Kimia Ghorbani – Vocals
  • Marco Fiorini – Guitar
  • David Sarnelli – Accordion
  • Kim  Baiunco – Double Bass
  • Federico Caruso - Clarinet
