Nobel Peace Prize: statement by European Education Commissioner Vassiliou

I am delighted that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2014 has been jointly awarded to Malala Yousafzay and Kailash Satyarthi in recognition of their struggle for children's rights.

Malala's tireless and courageous advocacy for the right of girls to have an education – a campaign that so nearly cost her life in Pakistan in 2012 – has been an inspiration for young people the world over. That work must continue while millions of children are still denied a right that most of us take for granted.

Mr Satyarthi has also worked tirelessly in India against the exploitation of children for financial gain. I warmly congratulate them both.
