COMMISSIONER VASSILIOU PAYS TRIBUTE TO ABBADO
Commissioner Vassiliou has paid tribute to Italian conductor Claudio Abbado, who died on Monday in Bologna (20 January).
"It was with great sadness that I learnt of the passing of Claudio Abbado: he was a legend at La Scala in Milan, in Vienna, London, Berlin & Chicago," she said, referring to some of the great orchestras he led.
Abbado, who was born in Milan, made his name at La Scala in the 1960s and served as its music director for nearly 20 years. He was also principal conductor at the Vienna State Opera, the London Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic and a guest conductor at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
He was also the founding music director of the European Union Youth Orchestra, conducting its inaugural tour in 1978 in Amsterdam, Bonn, Paris, Luxembourg, Brussels, Milan and Rome.
