Commissioner meets Greek Orthodox Patriarch

Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, held talks with the Greek Orthodox Patriarch, HHH Bartholomeos, during a visit to Istanbul on 10 June.

The Patriarch is one of the leading figures in the Christian Orthodox world.

The Commissioner welcomed news that the Turkish authorities are prepared to offer Turkish citizenship to prospective Patriarchs, even if they originate from outside of Turkey. This would increase the eligibility of those who could be selected for the post in future. The Greek Orthodox Patriarch in Istanbul is required to have Turkish citizenship.
